They have written me an email and apparently it is their policy to destroy them after 8yrs if you have not had treatment from them. I am shocked and alarmed that medical notes are not considered legal documents and that I wasn't even asked.

The best thing to do from now on if you attend a hospital is always ask the Dr for a copy of what he/her send to your GP. Some Hospitals have been doing this for a while but there are some you still need to request I’ve found.
The only other way to see just a fraction of records destroyed would be to contact your GP to see your full medical records to view letters sent to them by the Hospital.
