Testing active B12 would be just as pointless as serum B12. Both will be very high and you'll have to wait several months for levels to drop.
Measuring B12 status using Active B12 or serum B12 is like measuring a number of sheep by counting heads, or by counting feet and dividing by four. Both methods will give you a fair idea of how many sheep you have. But counting heads is less likely to lead to errors.
