Today I received a letter from the GP saying that your B12 injections will continue, the next being early Sept, and that we are awaiting advice from gastro consultant and the specialists about their future recommendations regarding the B12. It goes on to say.....My GP in on leave and she will respond more fully to my letter on her return.
So I wait for the next chapter but at least I have them back for now and on record.
I think in view of my folate being slightly deficient I will ask to be referred to the haematology dept to hopefully find why I am unable to absorb these vitamins.
Thanks for all your help. This site is a godsend.

Hi lesbud1. Great news about the B12 injections - well done.
And just to let you know, absorption issues (and gastrointestinal issues) are dealt with by a gastroenterologist rather than a haematologist (who deals with conditions of the blood).
Referral to a haematologist usually takes place if you have abnormal blood results that are not resolved after the suspected cause has been treated - in this case deficiencies (or, of course, if there are blood issues with causes unrelated to deficiency states).
Folate deficiencies can be quite common so it would not be usual to refer to gastroenterology for that alone. For severe deficiencies a GP will usually prescribe 5mg folic acid for 3-4 months then re-test. Some need to take a maintenance dose of 400mcg folic acid daily (over the counter from a pharmacy), and some can manage by increasing folate intake in the diet (always the best way to get vitamins and minerals, if possible).
However, if your GP is unable to determine the cause of your B12 deficiency - and there could be many - or you are experience gastrointestinal symptoms, then referral to a gastroenterologist may be useful.
