I am female (48) in UK - A blood test showed I had low B12 so, after initial loadng doses, I was put on 12 weekly injections. Since I have also stopped absorbing calcium so have to take vitamin D to help absorption.
Question is how do I find out why and whether there is an underlying issue?
I have not been offered any tests as initially was told they weren't covered on the NHS. I have private healthcare so would like to understand my options and what to ask for when I see my GP. Can anyone advise? Many thanks

Thanks fbirder - much appreciated. I am none of the above. I was tested for coeliac's and it came back negative. I do have stomach issues generally and eating anything, no matter how small, makes me really tired -enough to sleep for a few hours in the day which I don't understand why.
I would be concerned if any testing led to me being taken off injections. I suppose I just worry what's next to go wrong with the calcium issue too. Are these related would you know? Thanks again for your advice.
I’m with fbirder, was just told low b12 and loading and then every 12 weeks I have not asked why and dreaded my first blood test after nearly a year incase they stopped them . Cannot help with calcium sorry .
You often see people with PA being low in Vit D. I was. I was also low in folate and iron. The low iron, I believe, comes from a lack of stomach acid which is needed to absorb it. It is also needed for digestion to help absorb vitamins and minerals in food. I need to take a supplement for that. I wish you well.
Have read through some of your previous posts and can see fatigue is often present. Did you have Ferritin tested as suggested by Sleepybunny in one of your threads ? If low it maybe worth having a full Iron Profile done. Low iron = Low oxygen.
I would also suggest the correct thyroid testing if not already done - another cause of fatigue and 100's of other symptoms. The parathyroids are not connected to the thyroid but are involved in the balancing of calcium together ...
Thanks everyone. That's really helpful. Marz, I think my last post was my blood test results which I was just told were normal but I couldn't see ferritin or folate in them so had asked for help to understand the results but unfortunately had no replies. From what you and Martin 2812 have said it is worth me revisting this with the GP. Mine has just retired so wish me luck with the new one!!! Thanks again.
There are companies that do Private Testing - kits sent out to your home. It would cover all the thyroid tests - that are very rarely done on the NHS as well as all the vitamins and minerals. Go to ABOUT TESTING on the link below and then click onto Private Testing for the various companies that provide a service !
I'm a male and trying to understand the why's and why nots can frazzle the brain, I'm b12 deficiency and have recently been put back on folic acid tablets as well as the 3 monthly injections, I've been informed by members on here that stomach issues, general anaesthetics and certain stomach medicines (omeprazole etc,) can cause these problems, all of which I have encountered, but for whatever reasons they were never even mentioned by my doctor! It was me who asked for a blood test, and hey presto my fears were concerned, the condition is very sly so watch out for any other symptoms, I wish you a positive outcome for any future treatment, thanks.
