Cold sensation in the chest

Hi

At this time I am self diagnosed as B12 deficient and injecting in the process of giving myself loading injections of cyanocobalamin, 5 injections in and so far not really feeling any major benefit yet. Although I think it has left me feeling even more fatigued!

I have gone down this route due to problems getting the NHS to take me seriously, further complicated by working away from home. For the most part I have a lot f the classic symptoms, in any article on the subject I can check of most of them with the exception of head ache. Reading people's stories here has been a great help and confidence booster in confirming my symptomatology.

However, I have one symptom, which started long before any B12 supplementation, that is not talked of much, although it is listed as a B12 deficiency symptom, and where it is talked about it, is not talked of in the very specific way I have it. I suffer from feeling cold, but very specifically in my lower neck/upper central chest region (above nipple line). The sensation for me is exactly the same as if my entire body was cold and I am experiencing it as my core temperature is low. Sometimes, not always, my temperature can be measured sub normal at these times. The oddity with this is that often hands and feet will still be warm/hot, or at least not feel cold.

This symptom will come of after being outside in cold weather, or in response to not having eaten enough, right now I have a very low appetite (I also have done 5:2 fasting in the past, so I have trained my body not to want to eat, so often I forget to eat). Once this feeling kicks in it is very difficult to warm up, it has taken hot showers and a couple of hours in bed to alleviate it. Also, afterwards it often leaves me feeling very faint/light headed, weak, and confused.

Of course, this is a difficult one to search for, mention 'cold' and 'chest' and 99.9% of the results will be for colds! I have found only one other reference to a woman who often woke up with this precise feeling, no explanation given. In addition, if I mention this to a doctor it just gets a blank look... For me though, it is one of the biggest fear factors as it seems to suggest a cardiac involvement (I went to hospital with it once, was checked out for heart attack, given a completely all clear).

Would love to hear any comments on this, or from anyone else who has experienced it.

Thanks

Bob

It seems like B12d can mess around with the function of nerves all around the body and each one of us is different. We all get wierd symptoms and some people notice some more than others so it may be that it is just under reported - especially as it is hard to explain.

I think I get cold (hypothermic) so easily because my normal thermoregulation process doesn't work to reduce the blood flow to my hands and feet - so they stay warm at the expense of my core temperature.

If I get cold the only real solution is to go to my heated bed and sleep.

It can take a while to feel better and you may feel more tired because your body needs sleep for healing and the increased B12 is allowing repair.

Be aware that the processes of DNA synthesis, nerve function and energy release that use B12 also need lots of other things so you may benefit from a broad spectrum multivitamin and mineral supplement plus extra folate, potassium, magnesium and iron. Google these to see what dietary sources you might like.

If this doesn't work then look into other things like vitamin D deficiency and thyroid problems, etc.

Hi Denise

Thanks for your reply, I have previously enjoyed several of your posts.

That is an interesting way of looking at it, rather like giving alcohol to someone with hypothermia. It warms the skin surface and extremities by dilating the blood vessels, but of course that heat is stolen from the body core!

It is a weird thing, it has just happened to me here sat on my sofa watching TV, with an ambient temperature probably in the low 20sC. While I was experiencing the cold sensation in my chest, my partner felt my feet. To me they were warm, to her cold, so it does seem to be about sensation rather than reality. Now, about an hour later my chest still feels like it is cold, or at least there is a sensation in that area, but I am sweating and shedding layers... Really unpleasant!

I am aware of the other vitamins and minerals needed, also aware of potential dips in potassium. Luckily, after banging my head against a wall in the UK trying to get any treatment from the NHS in a timely fashion, my doctor here in Switzerland has taken me seriously and tuned other meds to help. Shame he is leaving in March...

Will be looking at the other possibilities, thyroid in particular, when I return to the UK in a few weeks.

The alcohol analogy is good - you understand exactly what I mean.

I sometimes get a sensation like someone has just poured a cold liquid over a part of me but my skin in the area is warm and dry to the touch.

I've been B12 deficient for so many years I've just got used to having wierd sensations on/in my skin from "beetles crawling under my skin/nails", "stinging nettles across my left shoulder", a "phone buzzing in my pocket", hot, burning, cold, wet, pain, loose teeth, total numbness, electric shocks, like an individual hair is being pulled, pins and needles, "loose hair tickling my face", other random tickles and itches etc, etc.

Over the last nearly 4 years of treatment they have gradually diminished although some got significantly worse before they got better.

I hope you get there soon!

I got to know about the benefits of vitamin B12 when I was suffering from B12 deficiency, that time I realized about its importance. I suffered from weakness, aches, swollen body & many other problems. That was a difficult time of my life. I went through B12 treatment, injections but not getting the effective results. Then I switched to liquid B12 supplement Super MIC B12, one of my friends suggested to me. I am getting the results from this Lipotropic Liquid Supplement but have a doubt about its usage. Can anyone suggest to me how long should I take the supplement? Here is the product link for your reference buymicb12.com/
