A short but really helpful link on the effect of stress on the gut/brain:

But they may also cause brain fog...

Interesting.

I guess like anything it is about balance.

Just as you can overdose on vitamin supplements so can you on probiotics.

The article seems to point to excessive probiotic use in a person who most likely was mild symptomatic to begin with.

Over or under colonisation of bacteria in small intestine is a bad idea all round but it is encouraging they are finally finding a link between mental health and the gut(!)

It seems that the way people respond to probiotics is highly variable. Some might get a nice colony of well-behaved bugs. Some might eject the newcomers. And some might get unwell. newscientist.com/article/21...

I guess one needs to suck it and see.

Indeed

I've found saccharomyces boulardii invaluable to control candida and for those dodgy takeaway meals ! Great for food poisoning and apparently for another gut infection blastohominis or something like that.

PS. According to leading Harvard neurologist and researcher into gut/brain/autoimmune disease, Dr K, says some people with advanced gut problems have significant issues with candida overgrowth, fungus, bacterial infections or parasites, so v. important to always start slowly, with small doses to avoid various uncomfortable side effects.

I find treading gently the best policy when introducing anything new into my body.......

I do agree with you . I have found probiotics excellent for me , They cured my bloating and stomach aches . Of course as we are all different , it’s possible that some people don’t get benefits . With a lack of expertise from doctors , who didn’t help me with PA , and it’s attendant problems , I have been very grateful for probiotics , which are best taken with prebiotics . Once on the right road , the probiotics seem to look after themselves . I don’t need to take them anymore , except for an occasional “ tweak” due to the fact of having low stomach acid caused by P.A.

So agree that we all have different needs, Wedgewood! For me, personally, Sauerkraut was a godsend and the best all round probiotic I'd tried. Got carried away singing it's praises in the health food shop queue this week, after someone in front, who appeared desperate for relief from acid reflux, could not decide. Afterwards thought, OMG I hope it works for him too 😳

But sauerkraut -I make my own , is the best probiotic , provided it’s organic , unpasteurised and eaten raw . It is an acquired taste , but when you know how good it is for you , you can learn to love it !!! I must try kombucha next .

Hooray for the new way of thinking regarding the gut and its effect on us.

We've known for years coeliac Crohn's IBs etc all cause depression but God forbid a doctor would ever treat the gut to improve the mental health.

"All disease begins in the gut" Hippocrates... We're finally catching up with the dude 👏
