Australia trip..

Hi all,

Haven’t been on for a while, loads happened in my personal life and I let my injections slip, only getting caught back up now. Hard to pull out of the slump but getting there.

My question is, I’ve decided to go to Australia for a year from October, can I take in my B12 ampoules? I have plenty there and they are long dated to 2020 but I don’t want to risk them getting seized at customs or getting denied entry for trying to get them in! I’ve looked it up and I think you can buy the b12 over the counter at pharmacies although it’s a lot more expensive for 3.

Any advice greatly appreciated

I live in Sydney and have travelled to South Africa and back on Qantas carrying needles & syringes in check in baggage and ampoules in my carry on bag. I had a letter from a GP explaining them, but I had no problems and didn't need to produce the letter. My daughter has carried needles etc in her carry on bag on domestic flights without problems.

You can buy B12 here without prescription. The cheapest I know of is Chemist Warehouse (outlets all over Australia) at $8 for 3 ampoules.

But also don’t want to risk not having them so it’s good to know I can still get them if I run out is it hyrdroxo you can buy?

Yes, it is hydroxocobalamin. There are 3 or 4 brands available. At present I am using Cobal-B12 which is hydroxocobalamin acetate in acetic acid made by Juno Pharmaceuticals which seems to be working. When I used Hydroxo-B12 (hydroxocobalamin chloride in hydrochloric acid) made by Aspen my symptoms started recurring, so I would recommend avoiding it. Most pharmacies can order the product you want if they don't have it in stock.

From about October it can get quite hot here (up to 45 deg C on some days), so be sure to keep it in the fridge.

Thank you so much for your help! I would of forgotten about keeping it in the fridge because it’s never warm enough here to worry about it. I’ll yakw a supply for a month which should be ok then start buying as I travel or more when. I’d exide to stay somewhere for a while.

JordanC, I was getting my loading doses when I went to America from Scotland. I packed them safely in my case with the needles, syringes and cinbin. I wasn't worried at all? My case went through security no problem but had they asked me I would have exolained. They are no the controlled drugs or anything sinister, it's just like a diabetic taking their insulin I expect. Enjoy your holiday, what an exciting time x
