PA and now Osteopenia

Hi. I've been taking b12 injections for 2 years now and have now been diagnosed with osteopenia and dr recommended Prolia injections. I have taken one, so far, and dr office never called me back for a 6 month interval to take next. I have since called thinking it was yearly; anyway, I am now rethinking all of this and was wondering if anyone knows of any recommendations for osteoporosis? Thank You all so much for all your helpful insights and knowledge.

claudette: My recommendation for osteoporosis is HORMONES. I'm 70 and I finally found a doctor who prescribes them for me. I'm on my 3rd month and I haven't felt this good in years. Anyway, it will take awhile for the hormones to start building your bones, but I believe they are so much better than the alternatives, ie: Fosamax, etc.

Hi Claudette.

I was not diagnosed and my B12 treatment not started until I was a mature adult (middle-aged), by which time I had permanent neuro complications. Among my other challenges, I am rather limited in my ability to walk, and I am prone to falling. In addition, both my biceps are torn, and my back muscles are consequently weak. The only weight-bearing exercise (which might help about bone strength) of which I am capable is some walking, but fairly little of that.

For the last two and a half years I have been in treatment for hormone-sensitive cancer. I take an anti-hormonal medicine which tends to thin the bones. I had been taking Calcium with Vitamin D twice daily for some fifteen years before my cancer treatment; since starting the anti-hormonal medicine, I have been taking it three times daily. I had a DEXA scan (which is to be repeated every two years) at the start of my anti-hormonal treatment, and I had normal bone density then. This April my DEXA scan showed osteopenia, and I was started on Prolia right away. I am to have the Prolia injection every six months, unless a later periodic DEXA scan shows further bone thinning, in which case I would go on the monthly dose regimen (Xgeva).

I have been in treatment with B12 injections for I think about nine and a half years, with my dosing frequency having to be stepped up at times when it was apparent that it was inadequate. Now I am on two Cyanocobalamin shots a week.

Four and a half years ago, I fell forwards onto my chin -- I turned my face upwards since I knew my arms could not help much about breaking the fall -- on a thin-vinyl-on-concrete floor. Nothing was broken. I still had good strong bones. I have no reason whatsoever to think that B12 treatment does the bones any harm.
