How long does it take for sublingual B12 to kick in?

I just began taking 5000 micrograms of B12 under the tongue 2 days ago. I'm doing this because doctors suspect trigeminal neuralgia that started last week. I have an MRI with contrast dye this week to try to see what might be the cause. I also suffer from hypothyroidism and my TSH levels last week were just above the current limit (4.12).

About 5 years ago my doctor discovered my B12 levels were low but I didn't really do anything to resolve it, stupid me! Two years ago my B12 was 312. My doctor wasn't overly concerned and I kind of just let it go because I have lots of other stuff going on.

I'm hoping the sublingual B12 will help with the myofacial pain. I'm just wondering how long it takes before you B12 levels start to go up?

(Does anyone else on this board have face pain /numbness /tingling from low B12 levels?)

Thanks for your help!

Hello :-) it took a couple of weeks for my sublinguals to kick in. Tingling and pins n needles are common side effects of low b12. Hope you feel better soon

Some people find that sublinguals do nothing.

A serum level of B12 isn’t anywhere near low, so it’s no surprise that your doctor wasn’t concerned.

I would try to persuade them that a trial of Bb12 injections is worth trying.

Your B12 levels will go up with supplementation which will make it harder to convince your doctor to offer treatment. Do you know the cause of your deficiency. This link from the pernicious anaemia society website is very helpful.

I have been having 8 weekly injections for 2 1/2 years now. In between I would self inject and take around 4 x 5000mcg sublinguals daily.

Until recently my face would still go numb, lips tingle and tongue swell in the run up to my next injection. It would feel like my face was sliding off but no facial pain unless I get a headache and then only on one side. It has improved & the return of symptoms has gradually become less with each injection. I can make it 6 weeks before extra supplementing. The raging tinnitus and hearing loss still appear to be permanent though

My doctors thought is was because I do not eat meat, though I eat eggs and seafood regularly. Trying to convince my PC to order the tests right now.
