Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be unusual for people in Australia to be mis-informed and told that B12 is prescription only when its over the counter in Australia.
Yes, very liberating to be able to control your own treatment.
Not at all sure why you have been told that as I am at present in New South Wales and I live in Queensland and have never had problems getting B12. I am taking oral liquid Liposomal Methyl B12. I take 2 sprays under the tongue each morning. My reading was just in normal range which means it is low.
The doctor asked for active B12 but labs do not do that if readings are in normal range.
B12 can be bought at chemists who have practitioner only supplies or at a health food shop. Tablets can be bought over the counter as well.
I'm in Qld and was told that the B12 ampoules are cheaper if you have a doctor's prescription but you can get them over the counter without one. However, unless you've got a doctor that bulk bills then you have to pay the doctor to get a script to get the B12 cheaper... ! I'm getting one more script just to ensure that I get the same sort in future then I'll be shopping on line, where I've seen some very good deals. Note: I asked the German company that is commonly referenced here about whether they supply to Oz and they don't.
