Si into thigh - ouch!

I did my 4th si last night into right thigh, it hurt more than usual especially after injection ( my leg ached really bad for approx an hour) and I have a nice bruise at injection sight... what went wrong, as all the others I've done were fine.

Ouch too SarahFerguson - maybe you caught a vein but I can't really help as I have all my B12 (over 600 of them over 45 years) injections done in my arm by a nurse so I think you are very brave to D.I.Y.

Hopefully some S! folk on here will be able to give you some advice but hopefully it's a "one off" and no harm done.

The bruise makes me think that you did probably hit a vein or a blood vessel. Both of those will cause bruising. One way of finding the right area for the injection in the thigh is this; while standing rest the heel of your hand at the level of your pelvic bone (the point that juts out) and let your hand rest along your thigh with the fingers pointing down. The tips of your fingers should be resting mid-thigh, right where the vastus lateralis muscle is.

Hi Sarah, I am into my 20`s with self injections, and have had similar experiences as you, a couple of painful insertions and 1 big bruise. The big bruise came about when I had to push much harder than normal to insert the needle, and it hurt. The next time I had difficulty inserting due to pain and what seemed like resistance, I simply pulled out and injected into a different site. My belief is that I nicked a vein the first time, and had hit a vein the next time, so now only fully push needle into thigh if there is no resistance. Hope this helps.
