Hello My husband had the whipple op in April 2008. at Leicster General done by consultants by the name of Denniston and Metcalf he got over it quicker than expected. The op itself is a big op and took around 8/9 hrs , he was in icu for 1 day and recovered so well he was put onto the high dependancy ward was on epadural and had tubes and drains in , this didnt seem to trouble him Doctors were amazed at his progress and he was discharged on the fifth day , done 6mth of chemo 5Fu as a precautionary measure Easy for me to say but try stay positive and keep calm ,this went a long way in helping my husbands recovery ,

I can understand you feeling scared - I had the whipple op in London about 18 months ago. It is a big op but you will be absolutely fine....although after the op there are tubes and drains and things I felt no pain having had an epidural. I was actually in hospital for 3 weeks in all. I am now fighting fit and well. You just need to be positive and treat this as "an adventure" taking one day at a time. Good luck and will be thinking of you. Let us know how it goes.....remember you are one of the lucky ones that they are able to operate....Linda

Hi, my partner had this op last June - like the others who replied have said, after 3 weeks you should be out of hospital. No operation is anything to relish and try and take it in your stride. Only some 7 in 100 are actually offered the operation so how wonderful it is that you can have it - look on it as the best thing that could be happening and how you can look forward to living life to the full in the coming weeks. Your taste buds might be a little strange afterwards but my partner now is back to his normal weight of 14 stone - he did lose quite a lot of weight initially but sometimes women don't mind that bit!! My partner not only had pancreatic cancer but there was some cancer (a different type) on the liver so his operation was 13 hours! it was very scary for him to learn he had an additional 4 hours on top of the original estimated time but these surgeons are doing it daily and know what they're doing!

Lots and lots of luck - you'll be just fine.

Hello I had the Whipple procedure in 2005 and are now very well. As others have said it is a big operation but the surgeons, nurses and support staff were all great. I was in hospital for 10 days. I know it seems daunting but i am sure you will be fine.

Hi

I had this operation in London Sept 2011, and am doing fine now. Yes it is a major operation, there is no denying that, but the support is fantastic.

I was in hospital for 3 weeks, and off work for 3 months in total. I lost a stone, which never went back on - no complaints there! The recovery is a long and gradual one, and I do have less capacity for big meals now. But hey I am still here and not complaining! Wishing you lots of luck. xxxx
