Do OxyNorm and Tramadol combine effectively?
For instance, if I want to top up the OxyNorm but don't want to go the whole hog of having another OxyNorm would a 50mg Tramadol be ok for breakthrough pain?

I've used oxyNorm and tramadol for my chronic pain for around 6 months now. In my experience, and my gp's advice has been to take both as needed, within the dose allowed. Not suggesting you take more than prescribed in one go but I certainly don't see a problem taking a less potent drug when you need less pain relief. Just be careful about side effects of cutting down too quickly, chat to your pharmacist if in doubt though.
thank you Rattitude
I think that if you have any question re drugs the best guys & gals are Chemist's even in front of Doctor's and they are usually only to keen to help.
good advice - thank you
It is a pretty unusual approach to combine strong opiates and weaker opiates at the same time though, even though lots seem to use them this way.
I too prefer to keep doses pretty much at the lowest I can get away with at all times and for that reason when I was using Oxynorm, I asked for the 5mg size capsules as well... there is even a liquid so dosing could be minimised that way too.
I used Oxynorm whilst coming off Tramadol, yet still found I had withdrawal symptoms from the Tramadol... such is it's addictive qualities, other than those of just it's Opiate action!
Only problem I found with Oxynorm was how quickly it was "spent" - about 3 hours and I was looking for the next dose
Macwylie I hope that you're doing ok. I think about you a lot as you are the only other person I have come across with similar pain - the location really. My oncologist had never come across it before though I suppose she was only looking among patients who had had chemo. I hope you don' t mind, but I let my husband read your blog as well for the same reason and he worries about you coping on your own. He has been wonderful helping me to cope.
I am taking Oxynorm - 15 mg twice a day, slow release - and Gabapentin. I am going to see the pain clinic again to talk about changing them as it's nearly three years now. Fentanyl is one of the drugs we have been researching. I also have an appointment to see a clinical psychologist. My GP thinks the pain is psychological or partly so. I'm not sure that I agree, though lots of crappy things have happen ended in the last few years apart from the cancer and chemo.
How did your appointment go?
Best wishes Nora1
