I have some nerve pain from bones spurs trapping nerves in neck and back.
80% of the time the nerve pain is on the mild side with short but sometimes frequent bursts of more intense pain like being stabbed with a needle.
I take opioids to manage the general axial neck pain when needed but my question is how much pain do people generally put up with before they take medication for nerve issues- specifically gaberpentin or Lyrica. I have been prescribed gaberpentin but have put off taking it.
I understand the side effects can be horrendous.
Cheers
Richard

My body made my decisions for me. At different times my GP prescribed Amtriptyline, then when that didn't work she prescribed Gabapentin ... that failed for the same reason ........ side effects of wild diarrhea. Told my GP to forget it and just keep prescribing me CoCodomol 30/500.
Hi if its chronic that should be enough ,to get it to help hopefully, I would not be put off that and pregabalin do help lots as well ,And you do work up the way with dose to see wot works ,you tend to get gabepentin if no luck there then pregabalin,
And try work with the side effects and timeing to suit individual I.e 4 5 am 6pm etc or 6 am 8pm everyone different though
hi, I had a trapped nerve in my shoulder the gp prescribed Gabapentin unfortunately I had an adverse reaction after 5 days ended up in stroke ward(nerve pain gone) but turned out medication caused a problem with my nerves and the signals they sent (but that’s just me everyone is different) now live with FND. Hope you get the relief you need.
Hi, I have been on Pregablin for years for spinal stenosis. I have come off them a couple of times but I had to go back on at a lower dose. I am fine with them. You should try and see if they work for you. I find Pregablin better than Gabepentin. Good luck.
I have nerve pain. I’m 14 years out from having my right pudendal nerve released as it was pinched in three spots. Prior to surgery, and because my GP and all the specialists I saw didn’t believe me, I was given an array of medications which did NOT help my pinched nerve pain but they did make me dreary, I gained weight and I became bloated and more inflamed and I didn’t feel like myself. Gabapentin, Lyrica and Cymbalta were the worst in my case, I understand your wanting to avoid using them.
Through seeking relief of pain naturally I have found a few things that help. 1. Passion flower tablets are wonderful for anxiety, sleep and pain. 2. Magnesium bis-glycinate calms muscle spasms. 3. Turmeric tincture or Curcumin tablets work wonders for pain. 4. Frankincense essential oil……can you buy a roll on that you can apply to your neck and back…..it crosses the blood brain barrier and calms the brain. 5. Pain patches are effective. Have you ever tried any? Feel better soon.
Hi Richard, I totally understand your hesitation. I am exactly the same way. When I first was diagnosed with both Sjogrens and Lupus I was put on hydroxychloroquine which trashed my eyes within 18 months. I refused to take another medication. I was adamant that I could help myself with alternatives. Using, essential oils, an infrared sauna, liquid glutathione and stem cell patches my Lupus was in remission within 9 months. Unfortunately, my Sjogrens is worse as well as small fiber neuropathy, vasculitis and degenerative disc disease. Several months ago after vasculitis put me in the hospital, I went on meloxicam and gabapentin. I also have a script for hydrocodone for 2 a day, but I have only taken approximately 6 times in 2 months. I have had no side effects from gabapentin. I take 1 meloxicam am & 1 gabapentin pm. It has made a world of difference in my pain control. I used to get steroid shots in my back, shoulder and hip. I cannot get them anymore because they made my glaucoma unmanageable. I had a full reverse shoulder replacement on the right & the left shoulder needs one but they won’t do it because of lymphedema from breast cancer surgery & treatments on that side. My rheumatologist commented that she totally understands how bad I feel to ask for medication.
Hi Richard, I have nerve pain all over from head to toe for over ten years, and for most of those years I have been on gabapentin full dose, 12 tablets a day with no side side effects whatsoever, alongside co-codamol and a heated pad every day and heated car seats, these combinations seem to help the most with my all over pain and really I couldn't do without them, I am the biggest advocate of gabapentin and cheerleader😅👌
