Clopidogrel

Had what was deemed was a minor TIA of left eye in June 2022 as lost part vision 5 maybe 10 mins , spoke to gp he sent me to get checked out at A&E who referred me to stroke department. 5 days later had the appointment at hospital and they performed ecg, ultrasound of neck and echo cardiograph everthing was clear , never had an mri of head but they assumed this minor TIA and prescribed Clopidogrel 75mg and statin , cholesterol was 5.7 at that time . I do not want to be on these medications for rest of my life as only 65 . The gp is reluctant to stop and states it's a precaution but I think side effects especially on stomach are not nice . Anyone else experiencing these concerns?

I've been on clopidogrel since a minor stroke a couple of years ago. I've not had any side effects. Can you say more about your's? I believe if you take certain painkillers alongside it stomach effects are more likely.

Thank you, I already have hiatus hernia and gastritis which I have medication for so guess the clopidogrel will be irritating the stomach lining. I'll chat to my GP.

Sorry but it's a mistake just to assume you'll get any side effects, I thought you were saying you already had them. I've had gastritis all this time, on lansoprazole, and I don't believe the clopidogrel has made it any worse.

I e been on clopidogrel for a number of years now since diagnosed with APS syndrome after silent stroke . Also have hiatus hernia and gastritis , they changed my Medication from omeprazole to lansoprazole because of interaction and I’m also on atorvastatin as well but apart from usual aches and pains it’s not been too bad , most days I do my 10,000 steps walking when not working

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I was changed to pantoprazole. Wonder if going back on lansoprazole would be better.

Hi..

I had something similar happen and had the same tests and and mri... nothing found. They prescribed the same Clopidogrel as a precaution. I also booked an appointment at the eye clinic as I'd had eye problems in the past, again nothing found. After a while I spoke to my GP and asked if I could stop the tablets...and she agreed but I have to have my blood pressure monitored and my cholesterol is okay. . 57 is a little high so maybe some dietary changes would help?

Have another chat with your GP and tell them your concerns about your stomach long term if you have to continue the meds.

Dear Handg,

I am a forum moderator at Pain Concern and have just been reading through your post.

I am wondering whether the Stroke Association UK may be better informed, they have a forum and helpline. I have included the link below.

I've been on Clopidogrel since my TIA in 2015 aged 65yrs. Also statins and BP tablets. It seems that I'm on them permanently now, so just have to trust the Dr's. Have regular bloods to monitor the medication.

Thank you , yes we have to trust them, the consequences if not could be worse than a few side effects . Probably discuss with GP my issues.
