It might be IBS.irritable bowel syndrome

Hi there,If it's your stomach itself giving you pain (rather than your bowel), it could be gastritis which is caused by acid in foods affecting your stomach lining. Try looking up the acid content in the fruit you've been eating. If you think acid in fruit is causing the pain, your GP or Gastroenterologist may want to do an endoscopy to verify whether or not this is the case. Hope that helps you Shorty!

I’ve just been through all this. I’ve read that the main fruits to avoid are citrus fruits. Melon, banana, peaches, plums and berries have been fine for me and even apples and pears. I always eat fruit with low fat Greek yogurt and it’s lovely. I eat cottage cheese, avacado or banana on wholemeal or multigrain toast (sourdough bread would be better but I don’t like it). Before, I never ate until evening but I read that you should eat small amounts about 6 times a day to stop your stomach acid from building up. I still can’t eat 6 times a day though. Eggs are good as is chicken and vegetables but I’ve gradually started adding other things in. I don’t drink alcohol. I started to have decaf coffee and sometimes oat milk or skimmed milk. Oh, and Omeprazole - again! My GP said if I get another flare up, take 2 a day. The thing is I’ve had to do all this research myself by trial and error. Nobody has helped me. I hope you get some relief soon as I got as far as calling an ambulance two weeks ago. I honestly thought I was dying with the pain. I went white, was cold and dripping in sweat but there was evidently nothing wrong! I’m just wondering if my scoliosis is squashing my digestive tract or it’s another side effect of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Good luck with managing your gastritis. xx

Have you tried Mango or mango juice? I find it really soothing for the stomach. I try to buy Rubicon mango juice rather than "mango juice drink" too much sugar and other additives in those fir my horrible pancreas. I'm glad you obviously done your research cos you're absolutely right about how bad gastritis can be. I thought I was dying too. I hope you find out the cause also so good luck.

Yes, mango and also papaya are supposed to be good too. What I didn’t say was that I find drinking coconut water is very soothing on the stomach and rich in nutrients. I can only drink one brand though starts with ‘I’ and ends in ‘t’. All the others taste rank to me but I suppose it’s personal taste. xx

Thanks for letting me know about the coconut water. I'll be looking out for the one you like. I'm sure I will recognise it when I see it! Take care.x

Possibly this has something to do with a fructose intolerance. To find out if this is the case, your GP should be able to carry out a test.

You can find a list of fruits which are high in fructose on the internet, so you could also try out just eating small quantities of fruits with a low level of fructose. Equally, these could be tried out with yoghurt ( 3.8% fat content) or cream as fat is helpful in making fruit more easily digestible.

Getting a GP to do anything at our surgery is impossible. I only ever ate Greek Yogurt 5% fat until this last bout of pain (also some cream with fruit) but just decided to experiment with low fat for a while. I certainly don’t agree that cutting out fat altogether is good for you. All my grandparents lived until ripe old ages on a fried breakfast every morning, cooking everything in lard and dripping etc. I think the major problems are the over processed and sugar laden fast and ready meals that a lot of people eat. I could put mine down to the anti-inflammatories I took years ago and gradually had to stop one by one until I was off them completely (due to stomach problems and nausea) or now my scoliosis putting pressure on my GI tract. I think it’s down to me tho sort it as nobody else seems able to or interested. ☹️

Is it all fruits? As above some are more acidic than others. Might be worth keeping a food diary and symptoms to see if there is a pattern. It is possible to be intolerant or even allergic to fruit. It may also be to do with your gut bacteria. You could try adding a bio-active yoghurt or similar to your diet to see if that helps.

Other ideas above also worth considering. I developed a duodenal ulcer and it was probably caused by an allergy to oranges and it was found by endoscopy. (I was drinking a lot of orange juice at the time). Citrus fruits give me migraine headaches too.

If there is a possibility you are producing too much acid in your stomach you could mention it to the doctor, it can cause gastro-oesophageal reflux (GORD) or an ulcer, and can be treated. Discussing these possibilities might get his / her attention.

You can see a different doctor or make a complaint via PALS.
