I was diagnosed with costochondritis last year , it’s gradually getting worse but no inflammation medication seems to help The pain by my left ribs is getting unbearable at times , last night I’d almost fallen asleep on my left side until it got too painful and I turned over , a few hours later it was hurting when I breathed out . This is a new symptom that was just agony , how do others cope when it hurts to breathe ?

i have had this for many years, not found anything to solve it. I have flare ups now and again so take ibuprofen as and when needed or ibuprofen gel works okay. They say to relax and not tense the muscles

This is a horrid condition. I haven't had it mysrlf but Ive supported s ftt re iend with it several times. Have uou tried heat packs (warm in microwave types) or hot water bottles. These can give some relief and the comforting warmth can help relax you and hopefully aid breathing. Best of luck.

I have had costochondritis for 15 plus years it comes and goes no pain killer completely stops it I have found that bending over table as in when eating crafting using pc anything in this position make it worse as does breathing in deeply

When it breaks out what helps me although it may or may not help you is I lie flat on my back but head slightly raised and feet I do this as soon as it starts if I try to push through it it just get worse and lasts longer sometimes I use a hot water bottle to ease it

I think rest help sleep is not possible light meals only it can last a few days to a few weeks but if I rest straight away it seems to last less time it is an awful condtion so painful I dread it coming again but have learnt to live with it

I really hope you get some relief or learn to live with it and that you don't get it often its so painful and taken so lightly by people who have no idear how chronic and dreadful the psin is

Gentle hugs

Hi Westie2012,

I too have suffered from Costochondritis, but mine was across my chest bone. I developed it because of stress. I thought I was having a heart attack at the time when it first happened, luckily I hadn't. Now my stress is under control, I no longer have the condition. If I do get stressed though very rarely nowadays it does come back and I just take paracetamol, I can't take anything stronger than this. Painkillers will help though or probably anti inflammatories, but through your doctor. I hope this helps.

Take care
