Broken Collar Bone

Hi, can anyone advise about a broken collar bone. My son broke his nearly 5 weeks ago and he still wears a sling most of the time. He goes back to see a Consultant in 2 weeks but until then I'm concerned he may loose the use of his tendons etc. as he is hardly exercising it.

I am sure someone on this site may have experienced this.

Thank you in advance.

I remember you writing about this a few weeks ago.

Why is he still wearing a sling? Has the physio said? And is he doing exercises?

Hi Bananas5

Thank you for replying. He is not wearing sling today he's not doing many exercises. His shoulder is really down on that side.

Physios dont seem to give you many exercises. He cannot put arm down. He cannot open anything using this arm to hold it.

Just concerned the shoulder is so far down.

He is making choices.

Once you point out the result of his not doing the exercises, then its up to him.

Perhaps he might follow a YouTube programme better??

You don't need to do many exercises but definitely what physio has told him Possinly he isn't doing what he's been told? His choice but is he aware how concerned you are and what the consequences of non compliance are?

But you can't make him

Did he not get advice when he broke collarbone? Certainly I wouldn’t want to advise because not ever had broken collarbone. Usually though people are given information and advice when a limb is broken. He may need to be doing gentle exercises to keep muscles and ligaments supple. If you’re unsure ask him to contact hospital department for advice. Reasonably because he is an adult they won’t speak to you about it. Whilst I appreciate your concerns ultimately it is up to your son to,follow medical advice and do what is required.

how about a warm water swimming pool that will be more comforting for him and his heavy limb. When I dislocated my shoulder some years ago I was told it was very important to get moving again, I managed to get back to normal after a lot of work. The swimming pool should be good it makes the poor limb feel nice and light again.
