Hi I have costochondritis for over 20 years.. I do get a lot of pain free days but when the flare up starts again it terrifies me..I'm in the middle of a flare up now for over 2 weeks..my bones are paining my shoulders and back.. my chest feels numb from all the pain.. I'm suffering panic attacks from this.. trying to take deep breath feels like my lungs are not filling.. keep thinking it's my heart or high blood pressure but I've been checked repeatedly.. does anyone else have these symptoms please..

Yes, but not as bad as your pain. Im just starting with this pain mine is situated on my right side and around my back area its like I have a band around my chest … I don’t have it where Im feeling breathless but it hurts constantly and really hurts when I walk Im hunched over sideways to alleviate it. I had UTI and Kidney infection ruled out now I need to make sure its not my gallbladder and once that’s ruled out Im stuck …. Stinks absolutely stinks.

Don’t feel bad you didn’t ask for this condition. Have you tried a tens machine? I have a small one because of my psoriatic arthritis pains and used it the other night believe it or not it helped.

I don't have tens machine I feel like I'm taking someone's appointment that will need it more than me..

Stop thinking like that it serves no purpose your in pain and your concerned about your health and you well within your right to be concerned and your needs are not being met …. Plain and simple so stop beating yourself up over a condition you did not ask for and stop worrying about other people and their appointments (not your problem) because guess what they wouldn’t give a crap about you if they had this type if pain, would they … nope!

Go to Amazon and type inTENS Machines they are cheap and effective they actually use these in pain clinics and physical therapy …. It helps I just used a small one that I had for my psoriatic arthritis pains.

If you really are concerned go to the emergency room instead of waiting on a cancellation. It will put you mind at ease and you can follow up with GP

Just out of interest, where exactly do you put the TENS machine? I ask as I have pain from my neck down to my feet, due to a fractured spine initially so most likely arthritis has set in, a chiro cracked my neck, which already arthritic, and caused damage and to cap it off, i had a bad reaction to the covid vax and now seem to have acquired peripheral neuropathy. I get quite desperate with the relentless pain. I think the loss of height from the compression fracture has somehow twisted my spine so i get a lot of discomfort around the front and whenever i google python like squeezing around my abdomen, it always comes up with the MS hug which fills me with anxiety.

If you go to Amazon and type in Tens Machine you will see loads …. They have pads you place in the areas you need them and you adjust the strength of the tens machine…. I have a small one I purchased from drug store for my Psoriatic Arthritis pains I loved it because it did allow me to relax and not obsess over the constant pain … Im currently using it to help with my rib pains and actually is helping.

It doesn’t cure the pain it just allows you to have some peace and quiet in your mind which I believe is 1/2 the battle …. If this makes sense.

Thanks for your quick reply. I will have a look. I fear i would need more than one.

No actually you won’t they have pads attached to wires …. Now that may not mean you can have one pad on foot and one on neck …. But most models allow for multiple pad placements within a reasonable distance maybe neck, shoulder and back area. Read the reviews thoroughly.

paining, look into boron and magnesium for possible relief. Pain causes loss of magnesium. Magnesium is needed to activate thiamine. Together they protect the body and brain from may disorders. Be aware of anti thiamine factors that diminish or destroy thiamine. Always consult with your health care professional before using any supplement.

This was such a common question on a bulletin board I followed. Often palpitations were another symptom. The doctor said that a good magnesium supplement would help. He also said people brace when they have muscle tension. If you are tense you can cut down blood supply and rib muscles are fragile. If you haven't tried warm compresses, see if that helps. I know it's scary.

I don't like the heat it has to be something cold.. it scares me so much.. feels like I don't get enough breath so I take deep breath repeatedly and make myself lightheaded

Well, you could try cold and see if it helps. Do you take anything that helps relax muscles like Gaba (not a pharmaceutical) or L theanine. All the B vitamins are important as well.

I'm wondering whether you now have scar tissue due to this for twenty years. An enzyme like serrapeptase is one that works on scars and extra fibrin in the body unless you are taking other blood thinners. Are you hypothyroid? That should be treated, if so.

I suffered for years with chest pain - thinking I was having a heart attack before my doctor told me I had Costochodritis. I use a Backpod which has transformed my life. Have a look at their website and also see your doctor to get checked out properly... bodystance.co.nz

Hope this helps.

This is really interesting. I have cervical and thoracic spondylosis but I also have constant pain in between my shoulder blades...sort of. It feels like there’s a tight band around my chest all the time, which my GP once told me was muscular. Could this be costochondritis?

paining profile image
paining in reply tosue32

It could be.. it's sore to press on.. I always feel like I can't get enough air when I breathe so I take deep breaths of course I get lightheaded doing that..Then I over think costochondritis and cause myself anxiety and panic attacks
