Miniscus pain

I paid to have my miniscus tear repaired as I’d been suffering with it for 10 months and getting nowhere with my gp except for him doling out painkillers. The surgery was two weeks ago and things seem better so far. About 3 weeks before my op my other knee was getting increasingly painful and I’m sure now that 10 months of walking so badly on one leg has caused the same damage to the other knee. I’ve no idea how long the nhs will take to sort this out but has anyone any suggestions for help. Cocodamal hardly touches it and pregabalin gives me bad nerve pain. I’m really feeling at the upper limit of what I can take right now so any ideas would be welcome.

Hi Pilky. Its worth giving your other knee time to settle down. My similar story is.. I damaged my meniscus which caused an impaction fracture of the femur (knee end) back in July 2020. Due to covid i didnt actually get seen and diagnosed til October. Put on waiting list for a half knee replacement which got cancelled in January, same again early june. In the february my good knee started playing up so i mentioned it to my physio and he said to ease back on all exercise and go back to 2 crutches instead of 1. That helped a bit but at a rheumatolgy appt in May i was given a steroid injection which worked wonders. I finally got my knee replacement on the 29th June and within a couple of weeks the pain was back in my good knee. I spoke to my knee consultant who was convinced that as i got more mobile (and walking evenly) it would disappear. I was a bit dubious but he was right. By week 7 post op my knee settled and i've had no more problems with it at all. I'm even onto 6 weeks of the couch to 5k program as both knees are now perfect. xx

Hi Pilky, sorry I cannot help much as I am in the same boat, I've had a total knee replacement and recently following a broken foot on the opposite leg am back to the pain trail, I have got the same pain in my knee replacement leg as I had before my op and my doctor is saying tendinitis just keep taking pain killers, I now feel like the whole of my lower body from waste to toe is painful. But like you say thanks to springersrule , it has given me hope might have to try two crutches again , maybe expecting too much too soon. Hope you get sorted and the post replies have given you hope like myself.

Hi Katie, i'm so pleased my experience has given you hope. I dont think we realise how out of balance we end up which puts strain on the good bits. I'd definitely say go back to 2 crutches and see how it goes. All the best xx

I had a meniscus repair 3 years ago and still have issues because I developed osteoarthritis in this knee that I did not have prior…. Maybe a visit to orthopedic for cortisone injection into the non- surgical knee is needed.

I’m having a cortisone injection into my unoperated knee in a couple of days and I’m using both crutches to give me more stability and take the pressure off both knees. I’m currently taking cocodamol which honestly doesn’t help much, I’ve come off pregabalin as it gave me appalling nerve pain. Has anyone found any sort of pain relief that actually helps?

Good luck with the injection, i hope it helps 😊. I found dihydrocodeine worked best for me, i stayed on it during recovery from my replacement too. I took normal ones through the day and a slow release one at bedtime xx
