Is there really a Nationwide Shortage of Hydromorphine?

Is there really a shortage of Hydromorphine in All Hopitals?

Well it's been some time since I've followed up on my last post and you'll all be pleased to hear "I'm still alive" for those of you that haven't heard from me😩 Unfortunately, I'm now weelchair bound and on more medication that small chemists stock altogether!

I had the promise 4 weeks ago that the specialist was going to take me into hospital yet again to replace the Dia-morphine in the Medtronic pump for Hydromorphone which is a much stronger than the Dia-morphine. I was due to go in last Sunday to start the trial on the Monday until I got a phonecall from the specialists secretary on the Thursday to say that unfortunaley I can't come into hospital as there is a Nationwide shortage of Hydromorphone.

I was so looking forward to the change of drugs in my box as I had the promise that I would feel the benefit instantly with 25% less pain than I'm already in🤮

I'm then told this week that the hospitals will NEVER be allowed to supply the type of strength of Hydromorphone needed for my Medtronic pump. The New law just came in that Hospitals are only allowed to inject this but not to be administered into a Medtronic Pump which is in my abdomen.

I am so down and depressed having been in the same extreme pain for so so long that I was put on this high and hope of feeling less pain from this drug and to be let down at the last minute.

It makes me wonder sometimes how much longer I can put up with this😭

If anyone knows if this is bull that I've been fed or if the whole thing is true, I would love to hear from you if you know anything about this?

I really can't answer your question but I am waiting on my doctor's office to call and schedule me for the pump. I live in the US and our drug enforcement agency is set to lower the amount of opiates the manufacturers are allowed to make. This will be the 3rd reduction in as many years so getting any kind of opiates will be very hard to come by. This makes me wonder if you're government has ceased allowing that drug in your country. BTW how do you like your pump. I've had my trial and now I can't wait to get the pump.

Hi there,

This is my 3rd pump and they have now stopped putting the pump in for pain control in the UK! Thank god I just got mine in time as I would say with the right medication in the pump it kills 25-30% of the pain.

At least now the life of the pump is around 8yrs as the 1st one I had stopped working after 5yrs and had to have the operation all over again. It wasn't so bad as they used the same catherter and tubes going direct into the spine, I'm used to it now.

Good luck on your pump, you will seem it makes a hell of a difference the first time.

Is yours for pain relief?
