Well done Daisy for getting me out of my cave. I have had a lot of inflammatory problems probably made worse by the stress of losin 6 people close to me, friend & family of all ages the youngest 36.

You are right I have had a lot of experience with being the recipient of cortisone injections.

First of all you should see your Rheumo re your shingles shot as you can get muscle & joint pain & some swelling as a result of that. It’s oral cortisone (usually on large doses) that gives some people Cushing’s syndrome where you blow up like a balloon and you have a fat round face. I get Cushings so only have inter joint cortisone as needed. At the moment I have to make an appointment to get my shoulder area near to my spine done on both sides. When I had a severe inflammation on the head of my tibia a few years back I had the swelling just as you are describing it and I couldn’t stand to put my foot to the ground. The next day I had a final interview for a job that I was after so luckily I had a really good Rheumo at the time who spent ages with me injecting the most painful sites. The next day I could walk & was pain free but took it easy after the interview. When I have them near my hip I have been always told to have total rest for 1-2 days so that the injected cortisone sits around the area you want it to be absorbed by. One time I could not rest for the hips due to family problem & I did not get the same results. I have to have each of my shoulders near the spine injected soon.

It is unfortunate that you had the flu shot, shingles shot & cortisone all around the same time. You will definitely have to follow up with your Rheumo or Specialist because some of what you are feeling could be related to your shingles or flu shot. I have never heard of anyone

gaining fluid or weight by cortisone injections.

Also I have not heard of the stomach ache and rib tightening from cortisone injections. Your specialist needs to get to the bottom of this to make you feel better and enjoy your pain free knee. Very happy for you with that part!

Just reminding you as Influenza A has been rife

In Australia and we have had quite a few deaths

(They are only publishing some of the cases so people don’t get alarmed unnecessarily). The influenza A shot us only ever 50% effective with the virus having the ability to mutate in nanoseconds. We have had the worst season for influenza A than in many years. I was lucky enough to work with a world expert on influenza from the World Health Organisation.

I will just write what the symptoms are for Influenza A so that if anyone gets it they have to act ASSP. It is always sudden onset (patients can remember exactly when the could physically feel it (probably had it for 1-2 days prior so lots of other people catching it as it’s very infectious then.

After sudden onset you usually have raging temperatures and hot & cold sweats and are badly aching all over your body because influenza A is a virus that attacks the muscles of the body and the main ones that it affects are the heart as that is a muscle and the diaphragm.

You have to have total bed rest and drink plenty of fluids. You need to stay in bed for at least 7 days and sometimes it is 10 days as if someone tries to do anything even simple things they will get worse and the flu will re bound and the patient will get a secondary bacterial lung infection at best & can die at worst. The virus of the flu can even linger on tables and inanimate objects someone who is infected has touched. The worse thing that can happen if a person tries to do a daily chore is that they can die suddenly or get so sick they end up in intensive care isolation and usually end up up needing a heart & lung transplant if they survive. It is very serious and getting worse

The specialist I worked with from WHO said we will get another pandemic it’s just a matter of when. I wanted to tell you because most Drs do not tell their patients an inoculation of Inf A is only 50% effective.

There have been a lot of people of all ages dying from it, I often think if someone is 25 they think thru are fit & it won’t happen to them ( it will & it does).

Let me know if you were told about the flu vac only being 50% effective as most Drs don’t tell their patients here, they are still learning about it themselves as when many of them started medicine they were not taught how to tell the difference between colds & InfA. In the 1918 pandemic more people died than people from all of war fatalies added up.

There is a drug called Tamiflu which is an anti viral capsule for infA but you have to start it within 48 hours of symptoms. I have personally seen some good results with this product, some other practitioners don’t seem to have the knowledge & experience so may just say you don’t need it. It is a very safe drug & will cause you no harm so you are better on that than nothing. It made some of my patients so well & they felt better in 12-24 hours. They still need to have complete bed rest for at least 7 days or else the infA will rebound and it will be worse than the first time!

Sorry to write about infA but I did not want you to think you are totally protected from getting the flu.

Do you think I should write a list on it here somewhere so people are very aware of what I have told you? If so which post would I write it on.

Let me know what happens when you see your Soecialist about your bloating etc, I feel it could be side effects from an injection.

Good luck Daisy, I hope that you get it sorted soon.

Best always

Melbourne Girl xx

Gosh. You really go through the wars with your pains. I'm so sorry. The side effects I reported have settled apart from the awful stomach ache and even that has settled in the last half hour. I Will certainly find someone to listen to my woes at the surgery if that doesn't clear. In the meantime. Thankyou so much for your long letter. All good wishes. Daisy

Hi Daisy

I’m from Melbourne too. I had cortisone shots in my right shoulder for torn rotator cuff & osteoarthritis. It always helped & I didn’t, as far as I know, have any side effects. You’ve probably been to a doctors by now, but if you haven’t, do go. I tend to agree that the symptoms might be related to the other shots you had. Maybe one of them interacted with the cortisone even. I hope you’re feeling better.

Thank you so much for reply. Seeing a g.p is a bit of a luxury round here so I have waited and thankfully the nasty feelings have gone. I Had no idea one could be hurting so much with bone on bone then suddenly able to walk normally. Whoopee! For now anyway.
