Amitriptyline 10mg

Hi All,

Just wanted to know if anybody has experienced similar symptoms to me whilst taking amitriptyline. I have been placed on this medication by my Pain Consultant.

I started this medication on 9 Apr 19, initially this improved my sleep pattern for a period of 7/8 days (around 8 hours), however l have now reverted back to my normal pattern of (4-6 hrs).

Secondly since taking this medication my pain issues have increased, l fully realise this is early days, and hopefully this will resolve itself in due course.

Appreciate your replies to these two questions.

Kind Regards

Hi Celtic27,

Thank you for your reply. I have been told to give it a fair trial of 4 to 6 weeks and then decide the next step. I believe the key to this medication is to find the dosage that provides the most benefit with the least side effects. May l ask what what dosage you are on for your sleep pattern.

Kind Regards

Amitriptyline is primarily an anti depressant.

Taken at roughly 75 mg and above it can help you sleep.

Under that dose it is often used for pain relief...a sort of side effect if you like with maintenance of 10 mg.

Above two sites are worth looking at.

Each person is different. So you can only record and investigate the effect on yourself.

Pain issues are often related to muscle control. It is possible that the drug has made the ability to control muscle behaviour worse.

What is wrong with your pattern of sleep? What are the pain issues?

Hi had amatrptilyne but found out i was alergic to it' i started seeing alot of spiders everywere so look out for allusinations ( hope i spelt that right ) but be so careful on it. Ironside

I took it for nerve pain (spinal/neck) a few years ago and although it helped me to have a better quality sleep, I got a hangover effect the following day and had to stop taking it. My daughter was put on it by the rheumatologist she saw 18 months ago and it helped pain wise after about 2 weeks, but that has worn off now and isn't helping. Our GP told her to double the dose (2 10 mg tablets) but, she had the hangover effect the following day, so dropped it back to one, which isn't helping sleep or pain!

I was given Pregabalin by my GP last week for spinal pain and am on three capsules daily now (you build up from one a day, then two, then three, over three days) and as yet, haven't noticed any difference in my pain. But, time will tell. Although, Amitriptyline didn't help, nor did Gabapentin!

Hi Jayne,

Thank you so much for your reply. You reminded me of a lady l met two Sundays ago when l went for my first group bike ride. We had a nice chat whilst biking 🚴‍♀️ and she mentioned that she had recently started amitriptyline 10mg for her

neck problems (worn disc). She felt it was doing her some good, and would continue using this medication. Seems it works for some people but not others.

I sincerely hope that the pregabalin

works for you and reduces your pain issues.

Kind Regards

Hello Cliff,

Thank you, I only said to my daughter yesterday that (touch wood) it seems that my lumbar spine pain has lessened, so fingers crossed it's doing its job and I can start to enjoy life a little more than I could.

Take care

Hi Hanna,

Thank you for your reply. May l ask if you started at 10mg and then increased through the range till you finally settled at 75mg which is greatly helping you.

I believed this medication comes in three dosages:

10mg

25mg

50mg

Hi I did try it about 6 years ago I had nightmares and night terrors . Found it made me too sleepy with teenagers and a business to supervise I had to stop them if an emergency happened I couldn't drive felt out of control. I hate taking medication daily just want to take them whenever the pain gets too much . I have had adverse reactions to some medication , anaesthesia and lots of cleaning products as well as allergic asthma so my reactions could just be my body saying no lol

I had a sudden terrible spinal herniation and was put on amitryptilyne but suffered from horrendous crawling leg sensation in both legs from it. I was then taken of it and put on dihydrocodeine before having an operation as the herniation became too big. Lot more happened but wont bore you with it. I kept on having nerve pain and was given pregabaline and tramadol which does help to some extend.

They put my granddaughter on this for headaches did not help with her sleep. Made her nauseous and dizzy so we took her off she now takes melatonin for sleep and it helps a lot. They put me on a similar one for headaches too when I was younger and it’s made me really sick because I react to a lot of meds won’t touch the stuff. They never found out why she was having so many headaches no brain scan or X-rays of any kind just said try this. We figured out most of it on our own needed sleep and dehydrated. This was a neurologist her normal doctor suggested the melatonin as it’s all natural no side effects. They also have a sleep aid with CBD that helps my husband relax and sleep and it legal now everywhere.

Hi Kim,

Many thanks for your response, and your suggestion of trying melatonin, a natural sleep aid. Will try it.

Cliff,

I have been taking tramadol, gabapentin and numerous other medications for several years for pain. I was given amatriptyline to use so I could return to work as a police officer without being drowsy. I used it for a few days but also noticed a massive increase in pain and although it was supposed to help support my sleep pattern which is non existing it did not and I found myself unable to sleep and in more pain.

I had to return to my doctor and change medication.

May I suggest that if you have nerve pain gabapentin helps. If it's muscular or general pain, tramadol is effective. However one tablet which helped me sleep, a little too effectively as I was struggling to stay awake at work lol is trozodone. Perhaps you could go back to your gp and return to your previous meds.

Good luck mate

Hi Jay,

Many thanks for your comprehensive answer, most kind.

Yes, l have noticed myself that for some reason l have been in more pain (nerve) since l started the medication (exactly 2 weeks ago now) and as mentioned before my sleep pattern has now gone back to normal (4-6 hrs).

I will shortly be making a appointment with my GP to see where we go from here. Your thoughts/suggestions are much appreciated.

Regards

Cliff
