I am new here. I have just been for a MRI scan after waiting 2 month for the appointment. I can not lay on my back as I am in so much pain from my buttock and pins and needles right down to my foot and after 10 minutes he had to stop it as he said he was not getting clear scans has anyone else been the same and where do I go from her?

Hi I have similar but with what's used to be called weavers bottom now called isioglutieal bursitis getting worse and worse over 11 months. Its now in my hip and legs and I get sciatica like you do and the pins and needles run right into my feet. I have painful neuropathy all over my body , arthritis in my back a slip disc that has started to get very very painful recently plus my whole body is in a mess. I have severe pain and pressure in my head and severe painful stiffness in my neck. I wok up at 2 am this morning screaming in pain all over my back I couldn't lay on my back and I couldn't lay on my hips as the same re bottom pain has now severe in my hips. I eventually feel back to sleep. But work up at 9 to me being unable to get out of bed!! I also have neuropathic pain in my feet and do much more. I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia at the beginning of the year and no I really do not know what's happening to me. OH re pain and sciatica I am have to sit on large ice acks from Amazon helps but this shouldn't be the case. I can not get treatment for anything. Then the DRs said I have Somatoform disorder and no one will touch me!! I am suffering everywhere intensely and can only see one way out. I can not bare all this!! My muscles in my shoulders painfully crack but still no release!! I have had no referral's.

Last months after the untrueful wrongfully diagnosis of Somatoform disorder I got undiagnosed with Fibromyalgia and arthritis!! I have had arthritis for years and years. The only medication I have been put on is pregabalin eventually for the nerve pain and it taken some away but not all. I can not wear my clothes or shoes this year and I really have no live live in my bedroom crying my eyes out screaming for help when its so severe all this.

I am a UK citizen an beside myself!! I don't know what to do!! I have all the symptoms of Fibro and because MS has a lot of the same symptoms that no even been ruled out. This is a lot for me to type trying to sit up on ice packs. If anyone knows what I can do please please let me know!! My undiagnosed issues are making me look like an idiot when I am far from that. So sorry this is so long but I haven't even put down everything. The NHS are severally neglectful and as a result me and a lot of people are suffering!!!

Oh re MRI scan can you not have been put to sleep? Let me know as if I ever do get to have one I will have the same issues!!

Hi I am sorry you are in so much pain. I live in Australia and I know of people that have been put to sleep to have MRI. In relation to the sciatica go to a physio or osteopath. If they are good they will massage you and show you exercise to do to get rid of the sciatica. Good luck. Lola

It frustrates me when doctors diagnose pain as a mental illness. I had the same kind of experience in 2013. But, I have been fortunate enough to have met a brilliant GP in 2016 who didn’t just think I was after a sick line.. She referred me to the pain team and I was listened to for the first time. I was diagnosed with sacroiliac dysfunction without having any scan. I’ve had various procedures since 2016. Two denervations which were successful in the fact that the pain was gone but didn’t last long. I had an emergency MRI in June this year as I couldn’t put weight on my left leg. This revealed dehydrated discs and facet joint fluid had leaked into the L4 disc and pushed it into the nerve root. So I recently I had a nerve root infiltration injection for which had been successful but also has determined that I’m for surgery for the facet joint disease. L3 to S3 are all affected. I’ll be getting new joint with plates and screws. I’m seeing my specialist physio on the 9th January to discuss when I’ll be getting op. So there is hope. I wish you relief and hope you are fortunate to meet the right people.

Hi I am cluster phobic and I need to have medicine to make me relax I can’t remember the name of it but I was only given 3 pills and told by the pharmacist NOT TO DRIVE I took it and was home at the time and it was a good thing my son was behind me be cause I started to fall. Then as we were waiting in my kitchen to leave my husband asked me a question about the checking account and I said to him I was sure that I shouldn’t talk about finances. You should ask your doctor about something to relax you I do know one thing that helped me when I had to have a test and They wanted me to lay on my back they put some kind of cushion underneath my knees it did help my back try it

Good luck

I can sympathise with you, I had sciatica pain for a year and it was sooo painful. The pain ran from my lower back across my butt and down my left leg to my toes - it was just horrible pain which prevented me from sitting down, lying down on my back and sides and the on position which I could sleep in was on a flat bed on my stomach. Ibuprofen together with cocodamol helped with the pain and cutting out gluten, adding turmeric powder and black pepper to curries I think also helped. No alcohol and acidic drinks and an alkaline bland diet so drink lots of mineral water is needed to settle the sciatic nerve. Only do gentle exercise and plenty of rest is needed. Think positive and it should hopefully improve and the pains will die down - hope this may help you, cheers 😀

PS I had my mri scan lying on my stomach as back was too painful

Good Morning

I am so so sorry you are in so much pain I know how you feel I looked into ending it all not so long ago as I was in so much pain, please try to find a solution with a pain specialist asked to be referred to a pain clinic although I didn’t find them that helpful everyone is different and you may find a way to manage the pain I use a Arc 4 Health unit it is strapped to my arm everyday it has helped but it took a long time to feel a real benefit but it does help. With regards to the MRI you can go to an upright mri Centre it is open and you sit in a chair I had mine recently in london under the nhs

I am under the royal national orthopedic hospital so please ask your doctor. Don’t give up I know the pain makes you feel like what’s the point with it all but there is light at the end of the tunnel and you may get the answers and treatment you need and you will feel better.

Best Regards

I can empathise and sympathise with you. I have also had sciatica and its awful to be in so much pain. With the MRI, my sister had a sedative as she couldn't lie like that. PMR is similar to Fibromyalgia. Ask to be referred to a Rheumatologist. Prednisolone will relieve the pain.If you can't leave home, at present, get the nurse to do blood tests at home.

I do hope you get answers and soon. All the best.

The Sciatic nerve runs down the outside of your leg via the thigh, the scans can help although sometimes the results can be questionable.

Depending on age you may be getting referred pain from the hip or nearby, although your description sound like a trapped nerve or restricted in some way. Nerves and tendons can be hard to pick up, so your GP needs to consider further pathways of treatment to help.

I have sciatica generally all of the time caused by Tendon Shievs affected by PsA, a form of Arthritis.

Try using NSID creams supplied by a Chemist to suppress the pain, apply the cream where the pain starts, it sounds like a referred pain so you need to apply where the pain starts

Warm compresses applied to the area where the pain starts, you can also direct a shower head to the area around the same area.

You do not mention medications, it may be an idea to be able to suppress the pain with a

NSID medication to reduce any flare on an affected joint

Look at how you are sitting, it is important your seat has plenty support for the thigh and Spine, the same applies to your Bed. Life of a bed is dependant on quality, anything between ten to twelve years Memory Foam Mattress seems to work well, we have then for my problem, they are warm and give plenty of support. Seating may need reupholstering.

If you need pain relief you can also try a TENS Machine, they can be purchased in a chemist or on the Internet. I get mine at BODYCLOCK on the web, I have a twin channel machine and they do work, there are also Pain Pens. V-Variable Tens cost from thirty to eighty pounds, if you are disabled you do not pay VAT. Your GP may be able to arrange training on its use.

Thanks for your informative post. Just wonder for sciatica and back pain whether pocket sprung or memory foam is best ! Should I buy soft or medium mattress. Your recommendation will be gratefully appreciated.

Hello Jean

I have an adjustable bed, with a memory foam mattress. We purchased the bed and mattress initially from HSL and it does help.. However we purchased a replacement mattress after about ten years or more, The actual bed consistes of two singles set together, Two adjustable beds with their own electric remote that adjusts the legs hip and neck, with a massage unit.

You can of course purchase a king size double bed although that is problematic if you start fighting over the control.

Silent Night sells these types of bed we replaced the mattresses from them although. We would generally shop around for the second pair of mattresses.

If you purchase from HSL bed and mattress with control you may still be able to get a Vat refund, Most companies will not cater for this.

The actual bed frame from HSL is very good quality. The massage system take a bit getting used to and you can adjust it accordingly

Do you have an adjustable seat ? HSL manufactures them with adjustable or electric adjustable control. I have had mine for over ten years and it has been upholstered , We managed to find a local company who sold their own range they contacted HSL who sold them the material with the same design to match the three piece, from HSL

The sky the limit, My bathroom has been fitted with a spa bath and shower

for directing the shower head to the afflicted area.

I hope that will help, you can also talk to your GP if the need is there and they can send an Occupational Health Social Worker to assess your needs,
