Steroid lumbar injection

I had this procedure last Tuesday and am now in bad pain. Was delighted this morning (after an uncomfortable three days) that everything at last felt better, but by mid day felt so terrible that couldn’t even call a taxi to get home.

Is this normal or should I be worried?

Is it the pain causing you to feel like that? Do you have a temperature or feel dizzy or weak?

Maybe try and rest for a few hours if nothing changes gives 111 a call x

No, nothing like that just pain and more pain. Many thanks for your concern. X

Hi sweetie I had them done a coming up a couple of years. They were very painful and I was told it can take up to 2 weeks for the pain to settle down. However to be honest with you my pain lasted a lot longer. But everyone is different. Good luck sweetie I hope that your pain settles down soon. Love and hugs 🤗🤗🌹🌹xx

Thank you for your lovely reply. Unfortunately things are not settling and its 2 1/2 weeks and today had worst day ever. First time even cried at work. Ivery embarrassing, i do take CBD oil religiously and that works for a short while but leaves me utterly exhausted. I find the recommended dose too strong and have to top up with co codamol.....two opiods, not a good idea . Flat out for rest of day. Feeling really hopeless tonight. 😥😥🌺🌺 🥀

Morning sweetie I truly feel for you. You really are going through a tuff time with this. Maybe it’s time to contact your doctor and tell them how you are suffering. Personally I would.

I truly hope that the pain eases off soon sweetie.

Take good care of yourself. Love and hugs 🤗🤗🌹🌹😘😘

I've been having them for years with a local anaesthesic, better than sedation for recovery, and have always found them a godsend. Obviously you'll have some pain in the injection region which I have had last a week or so. I'm very lucky. You must see someone with this. If you are under a pain clinic give them a call..

Strangely enough after so many years I've lost count I have my very first pain clinic appointment!! It's an hour and half bus journey away however, I'll be staggering in there😵😵

I wish you good luck and pain free future.

I had my 1st pain management appointment the other day, after 11 years I finally got a diagnosis (Degenerative disc disease) and an appropriate treatment plan (Avoiding opiates as much as possible, which both my dr and I agree on!) So on 17th may I get my first steroidal epidural injection. I'm hoping for the best but am confused as my surgeon says I can only ever have 2 of these injections in my life!

So could you let me know how many you have had , roughly? So if this does give me some relief I have a corner to fight from for more injections over surgical intervention! x

Thank you very much for info. Had sedation but feel its not working. Sone people are apparently not responsive to steroids, seeing specialist again next week. He was sooo positive it would work. How could he possibly know? We had never met before.

Did you not know Drs have all seeing all knowing eyes!

Which is why I take great pleasure (My previous experience as a Nurse helps me out a bit!) when I can either ask more questions they don't expect or coming out with various other options for treatment! It took me ages to find a GP who, after a few conversations which highlighted his lack of certain knowledge, lets me handle my 2 main issues my way and as long as its a viable option then he just has to sign! After all my 30 yrs of personal experience trumps his rotational training back in the day!xx

So right! Drs have to understand we are not just gullible fools but capable of asking questions and for informed advice. I have some experience too, working for a dragon at the local hospital and if one can get through that, docs no longer intimidate me....and a good doc will never do that in spite of their superior knowledge and training...but listen, listen, listen, and not keep scribbling away or staring at a computer screen. Well done, you. 🌼

was it a caudal epidural injection you had? I am having my third next week, which I hope will not be the last as they will not do them more than once a year and they are limited on how many due to the steroids possibly causing long term side effects. The pain relief usually kicks in during the second week, though you do feel a bit achey until then. Give it a bit longer but if the pain persists tell your consultant at the 3 week follow up appointment. I was told they only work for 60% of people, fingers crossed you will be one of the lucky ones.

Mine was on the sacroiliac joint. Ouch. No improvement but worse pain after 2 1/2 weeks. Its getting unbearable.

Don't know if I had the same as you, my steroid injections made me feel rough for around a fortnight. The epidural nerve root block took more like four weeks, I felt so bruised and achey, the muscle pain was the worse, and I took a week off work when at its worse. Good news is that it has worked for me and I've 50% less pain, hopefully it works for you too, but I would agree recovery is not painless, you can feel sore. I agree with calling 111 or your gp for advice. My gp gave me Naproxen to take edge off the pain. Good luck

Hi Krawlins...i had my first nerve root block about 5/6 weeks ago and yes, i had to have 2 weeks off work where i thought i would be okay about 2-4 days after. And yes, i believe it has worked for my lumbar region but now need to deal with the knees!!😀

Krawlins profile image

Funny you should say that, I'm now able to notice more the pain in my hips, knees, an ankle and both feet, what are we like? Wonder how long the relief will last? I have facet joint arthritis, a recurring prolapsed disc and other degenerative changes, what was yours given for may I ask?

Bea61 profile image
Bea61 in reply toKrawlins

I have widespread OA, already had one shoulder and one knee arthroscopy and whilst recuperating from the shoulder arthroscopy suffered a mild stroke which has left right side weakness in right thigh/leg. While seeing the consultant last June for more knee surgery he informed me i had a more serious problem in lumbar region and wanted to stabilise spine/disc probs before doing my knee again..also told me i had marked scoliosis in the lumbar area...this was a shock to me..but, realise now thats why i have had such back pain that sometimes on waking, i feel i am bolted to my bed and cannot move for pain....

Hope you are having a better day! 😣

Thank you very much. Really happy it has worked for you. Its over a fortnight and the pain us much worse. Checking in with specialist on the 6th 🤞🏼🤞🏼

I have to say unfortunately it appears my pain is coming back already. The 6 week phone call follow up hasn't happened either so probably just as well since I can now almost certainly say the relief I thought it gave me is no longer (tho I do have a UTI at the moment and have diverticula so am finding it hard to tell exactly where the pain is coming from).

Hoping you don't feel too bad today. Happy Easter x

Hi Krawlins. Thats bad news, am so sorry, but thank you for the info, really helps. Do try and find out where the pain is coming from though, its a huge problem but it must be worth it. I do believe we know our bodies and their messages best.

Will be stoned today!

A happy Easter to you too,

Oh haha, stoned! As in you're taking CBD, can you expand (esp if something that helps with the pain lol)

Hi Fyllida... i had first nerve root block approx. 6weeks ago and the first 2 weeks felt worse and had 2 weeks off work...but after the 2 weeks, pain was less in lumbar region but still even now have a dull groin ache...spoke to GP nurse and she informed me that when they inject these muscle areas, takes a while for inflammation to reduce and it does go all the way around abdomen area...

Hope you feel better soon.

Bea

Thank you, Bea. Fingers are 🤞🏼 But am very despondent as the pain is much worse than before. Nearly three weeks now.
