Since taking two rounds of antibiotcs, I have become some what constipated. For the past week it is very hard to have a bowel movement. Today it was so painful and after 40 minutes of pushing, my husband gave me an enema using a bulb syringe. It helped to pass some of the poop. It's been a couple of hours and now I have pressure and pain in my butt. I have tried to use the bathroom again, but nothing. Is it common to have this pain after an Enema? And if so, how long does it last?

Constipation and pain
Antibiotics can cause constipation. Ideally an enema shouldn't be needed. You could try increasing fluids, adding more fruit and hi fibre veg with plenty of roughage to your diet. You could be a bit bunged up somewhere along the colon ( small and large) . If you look at a picture of your lower intestines you will see how the large and small intestines snake around on both the right and left sides and that might help you pinpoint where a possible build up is. I had severe constipation when I was in hospital and had to have several enemas and daily laxatives a few years ago...but was still having pains, both on the left and right sides.. I bought some D.E. powder diatomaceous earth and after a few doses it cleared the rest of the rubbish out..... no more pain.
I kid you not, I was amazed on how much it removed... and I was pounds lighter!!!If you do go down that route, be assured that it isn't harmful, but you must ensure you drink enough fluid with it. You say you have a pain in your butt, that could have been caused by over straining and it's an area where hemorrhoids start, so watch for any blood staining.
Most laxatives work by drawing more water into the stools which is why you should keep your body hydrated. But it's best not to get into the habit of taking laxatives. Exercise also seems to help, even if you can't do much, brisks walks etc seem to help get the system going.
Hope this helps
As saj01 says fluids are your best friend. Fig biscuits or syrup of figs is good but best answer if you can get no relief is to consult a pharmacist. Explain your problem and they will get you the right level of help.
Don't spend time pushing. It is not giving birth and you will only get piles.
Good luck, Rib
Dear Victoria,
I wrote a 'Post' regarding Constipation recently, a Follow Up, to one I wrote some years ago. It does seem that we ALL suffer, from Constipation- shall I say- a fair bit.....Actually a LOT!
It DOES seem that we all get constipated, far more than 'Normal' people. Not that Knowing this 'Helps', when you are Straining, seemingly 'all morning'!
Sorry that this has not been much help, but do read my other 'Posts'.
Kindest Regards anyway

Victoria15, I'm actually experiencing the same issues currently! I have been on antibiotics for a week now and honestly they have always made me feel sick, nausea, bloating, etc even when taken with food. Anyway, I was previously prescribed Myralax for a separate medication but I've found this definitely helps with the constipation. It is not a typical laxative more of a stool softener. This is an over the counter med you can purchase at any drugstore. I definitely recommend it if you're still having a difficult time. Hope you feel better soon and let me know if you have any questions.
