Constipation!

Hardey_Leone profile image
56 Replies

When my Dr came around today, he warned me that this oxycodone would

make going to the toilet difficult! He also warned me laxatives were not a good

idea either. Please help! My husband must not find out about this.

(update: he left)

What do you guys use or do to cope with this embarrassing problem?

I use Laxido sachets once a day. I'm also a vegetarian so my diet is high in river. Drink lots of water. I rarely have a problem and am on MST twice daily.

of course my diet is high in fibre not river !

Dear deejames

I know that this is NO laughing matter- indeed I have commented on Constipation myself, on several occasions- NOT funny, at all. However.....a 'Diet High In River', DID make me smile. Sorry but my imagination got the 'Better', of me!

I think Small 'Typos' or, 'Unintended Words', can sometimes Brighten 'Things Up'. I hope that your not offended that I think that THIS IS, one of those 'Moments'.

Clearly I do send Hardey_Leone my, Very Best Wishes.

Hi hardey- Leone

I use Movicol Sachets when needed and they work well as gentle. Lactulose is also good as it's a gentle syrup.Ask your GP about them. X

Hi that the first time I have heard about oxycodone making it hard going to the toilet u should ask him to change it

Buy psyllium from your local health shop,it is the best and will not tamper with your meds or cause stomach problems.

I have PHN and take Oxynorm/Oxycontin to control the awful spiking pain. It causes constipation and if you don't want to take laxatives then don't take the pills regularly, just take them as and when you need them. I find that when I have a day when I don't need these pills, my system goes back to 'normal'. I've tried laxatives in the past and they just give me dreadful stomach pains as they try and work. The other 'up' side of not taking Oxynorm/Oxycontin regularly is that your system doesn't get used to the drugs and makes them more effective. I wish you well.

Hardey_Leone profile image
Hardey_Leone in reply to Kate-L

I tried this over the last few days. It has helped as I had a break in the pain. But if I have pain for a few days, I have no choice. You really notice it when the pain come back!

Kate-L profile image
Kate-L in reply to Hardey_Leone

Those pills really work, yet if you take them regularly, like most pain specialist prescribe, you turn into some kind of addict in a very short period of time. Like you, I've also taken more than I should and it scares me, but the pain has been so bad (pain score 9+) that I haven't known what to do. I've brought this under control now, but the temptation is always there 'shall I take just one more' . It's a juggling act every single day.

Hi Hardy-Leone

The best advice is do what works best for yourself.

I do use the powdered form of laxative along with fruit.Just take the laxative as you need it not every day.Believe me I ended up in hospital with the constipation,so you try out meds, along with your GP advice an I'm sure your husband would support you, please don't be embarrassed.

Good luck

Hi Leone, I think most of the people on here who are on pain relief struggle with constipation & have tried all sorts of things - (and believe me, I've tried most of them! ) My doctor prescribed a product called Laxido - they are sachets of powder which dissolve easily in about half a glass of water, they don't taste too bad but most importantly, just one a day means I 'go' every day. Hope this helps.

Hardey_Leone profile image
Hardey_Leone in reply to Blondie-B

I think he did that for me this week. Must pick up 2moro. Thanks.

Why are you so afraid of your husband's reactions. He should be supporting you not criticizing you for a condition you can't help. Most pain killing drugs cause constipation. Eat lots of fiber porridge oats are good and prunes every morning.

Good luck.

Taking fat free yoghurt twice daily may help

I take Senna when needed, but very occasionally, I drink lots water, prunes & orange juice. Also find Diet Coke works for me

Hardey_Leone profile image
Hardey_Leone in reply to Raksha1964

Prunes were working but made my acid reflux come back.

Don't know what oxycodone is Hardey leone? but I suffer from chronic constipation even without taking medicines/drugs. As long as I take laxatives (laxido twice a day and fibrogel once a day) then I'm fine. I take Amitriptyiline and occasionally Co-dydramol which can cause constipation but even without these drugs I still suffer badly.

Hardey_Leone profile image
Hardey_Leone in reply to

Oxycodone is a very strong pain killer. 1.5 stronger than morphine.

Make sure that you eat a lot of fiber every day like

apples,Pears, prunes, get double fiber wheat bread

for toast, make sure you eat vegetables in your salads. Oatmeal from Quaker in packs give you 10 grams of fiber for breakfast. Your diet is Key. You should have at least 25 grams a day. And Pray to God.

I have the dicoutose night and day and have a great diet. It's just not enough.

Hello Leon

Most pain medications at times will cause constipation, that is just part of the contraindications. Some people can be ok. All I can really say is eventually the body should revert back to normal.

What I suggest is that you drink fluids and keep going to the toilet at the same time during the day, even though you may not pass anything. You could try a small spoon of Olive oil if it is really bad, although awaiting for the body to recover is the best way.

No proper bowel movement can last for quite a long time without any real damage.

Why would your Man give hell because you are constipated, it seems to be very unreasonable

Leone

It is a shame that all He can think of is sex.

Life is more complex than just that, I feel sorry for you if He is unable to consider your needs. Try the Olive Oil take spoonfuls two or three times a day. You could try Syrup of figs, fresh figs, sometimes sanna. They are natural products and will not upset your tummy or bowl, they also have a gentle action rather than some of the other laxatives.

Bob, It did cause me damage. They become hard and cut my insides. Then I bleed and so on.

in reply to Hardey_Leone

Your GP can arrange to have the bowel cleared out if it really is a problem. You can be referred as there are powders they use when they need to check the bowel for cancer or examination. When we retire we are on occasions given an inspection of the bowel and intestine. I had this test done earlier on this year.

When they do the test a camera is put up your bottom it consists of a long tube, to do this they clear the bowel and on many occasions sedate you to prevent the discomfort. The powder they give the day before or so just goes straight through you and this allows the tube up

Auh pettle please don't stress it's so much more common than you think. Any morphine based medication can constipated the bowel. Try simple measures orange juice, drinking lots of water , stay hydrated most medications dry up the body quicker than someone who doesn't take any meds, a lack of movement contributes as well.

Try lactulose you can get it over the counter in boots also Senna tablets are good and follow the instructions if your body isn't used to you taking any of these they will be rather affective. Ortisan from Holland and Barrat is good it's a more natural liquid to help the bowels move and can be added to diluting juice.

Good luck

I find Docusate the best which is a bowel softener unlike Dulcolax which is a laxative I take 1 or 2 at night but start with 1 and gradually find what you need. I agree green veg and 8 glasses of water a day help You can get your Dr to prescribe it or try 1st if you like. You can buy it as Dulcoease.

It is all about getting the balance between good and bad side effects of medicines.

Hope all goes well

Hardey_Leone profile image
Hardey_Leone

Thanks everyone! I take Docusate night and day. It's helping but it's just not

enough. Many of the foods I need to keep going make my acid reflux worse

as I have a hernia too (also caused by the things I was doing in those shoots)

My back pain is my main thing right now anyway.

Your husband should be supporting you through everything! Who cares if it's not sexy? He sounds very selfish honey. You need to take care of yourself and he should be helping not making you feel ashamed.

Sounds like you've had loads of great advice already. Keep drinking water but obviously if your symptoms persist you should seek medical advice. Hugs x

I have used all of the tips but I'm not better. I shall be blunt:

The constipation is really bad. I'm now cutting my insides as my stools

are so hard. I see blood after the pain.

Hardey - looking at your other posts (most now deleted) about how you are over-using these meds I'm not surprised! Please take a look at my response on your current most recent thread. I've suggested you contact NHS 111 (their non-emergency no.) if you are unable to speak to your own doctor at the moment. You really are misusing the drugs you've been given - taking way too many. Please heed my warning on the other thread and contact 111 for proper medical advice.

Hardey_Leone profile image
Hardey_Leone in reply to CarolineC57

Thanks. I'm not sure you know or not. I did take the warning and I spoke to another Gp. He did not want to change a thing.

CarolineC57 profile image
CarolineC57 in reply to Hardey_Leone

Hi Hardey - yes, I saw that. Glad you got a second opinion. I'm surprised at the advice though - but I didn't realise, from your earlier posts, that you had already been on other meds for some time so I guess that makes a difference.

Regarding constipation, basically there are two types (I have chronic constipation too, so I know about this from personal experience). You can either have trouble getting it to pass through your system - in which case bulking agents such as plenty of bran might help. Or you might have hard stools - which sounds like your problem, and mine too. In the case of hard stools, a stool softener such as lactulose (over the counter or on prescription) should help. I take this myself and it has helped quite a bit. Bulking agents simply gave me more pain.

I hope this helps and you find some relief soon. :-)

Hi Hardy_Leone,

I'm sorry you are having such a difficult time. I am inserting a link below for a recipe called Yakima. It is very effective for constipatiion and would encourage you to try it. It looks just like apple butter, so you can eat it on a piece of toast and no one would be the wiser. I have pudendal neuralgia and do understand that this problem can be a source of embarassment even with your significant other or family members. The article states this recipe was developed for cancer patients...it's an interesting read. Please give it a try and let us know what you think. Best Wishes.

I help myself by using several different things. I take magnesium citrate 300mg per day (it's an over-the-counter supplement). It has the effect of making people a little bit sleepy, so evening use is best. Magnesium citrate also has a mild laxative effect at the dosage I've mentioned.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magne...

Another thing I take is vitamin C (in the form of ascorbic acid, not the fizzy stuff) in high doses. Start with 1000mg twice a day. Then add another 1000mg every few days. There comes a point when it will loosen things up. Once you've got things to loosen up a bit too much, just go down 1000mg and keep that as your permanent dose.

If you want to know about the possible adverse effects of high dose vitamin C :

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitam...

And for more info on vitamin C generally :

lpi.oregonstate.edu/mic/vit...

I'm not medically trained, and I'm only passing on info from my own experience. So please do your own research before following any of my suggestions.

Hardey_Leone profile image
Hardey_Leone in reply to humanbean

Thank you. That was very kind of you. It really is this side effect that is creating the main problems with me and pain. I fear of when or how I will go. Or if I will cut myself this time or not from such hard stools.

I already have duclsate night and morning. I will try your ideas. They also seem to be much more healthy sounding.

Happy Xmas.

humanbean profile image
humanbean in reply to Hardey_Leone

I should point out that taking more magnesium citrate than I mentioned isn't a good idea because it could cause serious problems. I've suggested a dose which is within the maximum tolerable upper limit for magnesium.
