Flu like symptoms and pain

Hello everybody,

Since Christmas night (so nearly 5 days) my partner has been really ill. He's had flu like symptoms including blocked nose, coughing, aches, pain and temperature fluctuations. The most concerning thing is that he has had terrible neck pain. To the point it's debilitating. He says the pain is on the bottom of his neck more on the left side and it's like a continuous shooting pain.

He's taken paracetamol and ibuprofen and neither are making a difference. He's tried hot and cold compress and having a hot shower. He seems to be getting worse. He won't let me ring NHS direct. He was saying he'll try get in the gp tomorrow but I just don't think he'll be able to get an appointment.

I was sick this morning at 9am and have not felt great either but I've never seen him like this before and I'm worried it could be something more serious like an infection. How possible is this? What can I do to help?

Thanks in advance.

My son and I have had similar symptoms, severe headaches, neck pain, sore throat and high temperature, but I have the flu vaccination so I think it’s just a virus, we’ve been unwell for 7 days now, hope you both feel better soon and it is nothing more serious than a virus x

Hi. I know of quite a few people who have had flu like symptoms or heavy colds. It must be a virus going round. The weathers too mild to kill off all the bugs.

Hope you feel better soon.

I wouldn't mess around those are symptoms of meningitis. I would go to the e.r. immediately

Thanks to you both. He's feeling better today with the occasional shooting pains in the neck and tiredness. Hopefully we'll have both recovered soon. I hope you and your son are on the mend now too.

Thanks again.

I think it’s time to go to the hospital that’s a long time to be in pain and you don’t need to be sick who’s going to take care of either of you if your both sick.

I am no doctor and I always say if you have to ask someone else before you ask a doctor. You must need medical help.

Good luck and I hope both of you feel better very soon.

Sorry to hear. Has your partner been exposed to ticks at all? Flu symptoms can be the early signs of lyme disease. They can survive in winter! I got lyme disease from a tick 8 years ago and my symptoms started off as flu like symptoms with bad neck and joint pain too. Really hope it's something less serious but best to find out! X
