Little effect now

So...the gabapentin is now having little effect, my leg pain is being made worse by excruciating cramp. This cramp pain is lasting for ages, any suggestions as to how to get rid of the cramps? Also...is pre-gablin any better as a pain suppressant?

😣😢

Morning Angelaangel

Pregabalin is the 'sister' to Gabapentin and usually given as it has less side effects. You don't say what strength you are taking?

With cramps rubbing or massaging moisturizer cream or similar can help. It is the rubbing which is helpful rather then the addition of medication. If you have someone to do it for you it is even better

Hi

I'm on 2700mg of gabapentin a day

That is high and little room for increase if thy have stopped working.

IF you do come off them and change to something else..Fentanyl patches are excellent...NEVER stop but reduce extremely slowly.

Please speak with yore GP or pain consultant about alternative

Low magnesium can cause cramps. I take 300mg magnesium citrate every evening and it helps enormously. There are other ways of supplementing magnesium.

Please note that you have to have reasonably good kidney function before supplementing because the kidneys eliminate excess magnesium if necessary, but there is little point in testing magnesium. Only 1% of the body's magnesium is found in the blood stream, and measuring what is in the blood doesn't accurately reflect what is found elsewhere in the body's cells.

.

Low iron can cause problems with cramp as well. You would need to get your iron levels tested before deciding if it is safe to supplement, because iron is poisonous in overdose.

Suggested optimal levels for iron and other related measures :

If you get restless legs as well as cramp, then getting iron and ferritin levels optimised can help with that too :

.

I have also found that altering my diet to improve my potassium levels also reduces cramp.

how long have you been on gabapentin? I would try something natural that targets inflammation and pain. I know of a natural product that has worked for me and lots of other people. magnesium targets cramps especially the magnesium 365 real flavoured powder drink.

Medications can sometimes actually cause cramps, check side effects of medication. Magnesium helps relax muscles and should help cramps.
