Hi,

I have Pudendal neuralgia and I desperately need to excercise. Does anyone know of any excercises that don't excacrbate the pain? Need to get some endorphins to stay positive x

Swimming, but not breaststroke. If you have trouble sitting, using a pool noodle, bend it into a u shape and sit on it like a swing (under your thighs) in the water. Builds your core muscles whilst trying to balance and feels amazing to sit straight with no pain. Learnt this at hydrotherapy. Hope it helps.

Thank you. I definitely need to build core muscles. Used to go gym and swimming but was told not to excerise, for the past 3 years I've had no exercise and feel so unfit and no muscle tone at all now. Sitting is so painful, I am looking forward to trying the pool noodle . Thanks again, feel better just thinking about it x

I'm the same as you.... Desperately need to get some fitness back.... But struggle to do anything that doesn't flare my nerves too much, the swimming thing sounds good.

Why not breast stroke though?? It's the only one I can do?? X

Kick your legs instead of the frog push. I used to swim just using my arms to tone them up, think I will try that again to. Can't wait to use the noodle.

It's awful isn't it! if I walk to far, do to much round the house etc the pains horrendous. I didn't realise so many people suffered with this.

It will be a week or two before I'm able to go swimming but it's something to look forward to and hopefully I'll get a six pack soon haha xx

Yep... I'm the same. It's just so limiting... And no one really gets it. From the outside I look well... But on the inside my whole rectum and coccyx are on fire. I can no longer even go to work.

I'm just thankful for places like this so we know were not alone.

Yes... You will soon be sporting a nice six pack! Lol

Suzysheep...I have the same symptoms as you and because I look ok on the outside I'm sure people think I'm making it up...I would like them to have just 1hour dealing with this pain. Also because I can't sit straight it has affected the top of my spine and I'm now getting horrendous migraine. I asked my physio about swimming as I used to go all the time before the surgeon damaged my nerve, but said it may make my symptoms worse..so am too scared to go!

I only found this site by accident tonight. It is different than some of the other sites, I like it because it is a new perspective. I am 64 and have had this suffering for nine years now. I have had barely any exercise either except for here and there when it is not too bad. I just started on Saturday to walk around the pool to get some exercise. I am in awful pain tonight so who knows if that triggered some of it.

AMJ65...Em' who told you not to exercise, Because moving your muscles is essential to pain management, but hey we are all different , but what I have learnt over many years and that is not to stop exercising, gently if need be I mean how are you ever going to know what is causing the pain , and then devising a way round it , like posture, and there is relaxation exercises and breathing exercises now that is a game changer where pain management is concerned, because neck and arm pain can be relieved a bit by just expanding the chest to it's full and breathing exercises while lieing down learns you to control muscles individually , not to mention the greatest muscle of all," the brain" that learns to calm itself through fixing on to something else and away from the pain, at least for a while...best Alex

Hi Alex,

I was told by my GP not to exercise, I used to go to the gym all the time. It has been difficult and I do try to get some exercise however I end up in flare ups for days most of the time. I think walking ( not to far) is the best thing for me.

You shouldn't do anything that moves your hips outwards as that stretches the nerve. Kicking your legs up and down doesn't move your hips so much. It's on the pudendal hope website. When I did hydrotherapy sessions I walked forwards and backwards across the pool (water above waist height), marched on the spot, did forward and backwards kicks but not too high, then sat on my pool noodle for ages. As you get your balance, try putting one or both hands out the water (hold noodle in place inside your bent elbows). It makes the balancing harder and uses more core muscles. You have to be just deep enough that your feet don't touch the floor when sitting. I was always exhausted afterwards but never in much more pain than usual. Pity I couldn't carry on, but have bought my own noodle to go to local pool when I've recovered from my surgery.

I have looked at one of your comments to Sueboooo.

"no muscle tone at all now". This suggests that surface muscles are too relaxed with maybe the internal muscles responding by being too tense. The internal muscle being too tense could be applying compression to a nerve or pulling on bone tissue with resulting pain and discomfort.

It is worth having a massage therapist check you out to see if this over tension exists. It is worth seeing an Alexander Teacher with over ten years of experience. They hopefully will enable you to re-adjust your posture towards better usage.

I wonder what is causing it, because with differing causes it is almost impossible to know what muscles to keep working but I suggest that if you can do any movements that does not cause pain then you should move gently to see what sensations you get and then move all you can because your body will tell you what is and what isn't best for you and I suggest you do not sit too much and try not lifting shoulders too much.

But all that said, I would not advise anything that you yourself can't do without pain and finally expand the chest with breathing exercises. best Alex.
