I went to the doctor and he took me off of the amitriptlyne because it was making me to tired and i could not take during the day. He switched me over to 20 mg of prozac and i wanted to know if anyone else has taken this for anxiety and has it helped and if anyone has had any side effects from it.

I have a friend that has been on it for about 20 yrs. & it really works for her. It took about a month, if I remember correctly, to kick in. The only side effect she had was a little weight gain, but the benefit was worth it.

I have been on Prozac for 10+ years, and I am going to ween myself off them as my GP never reviews anything ever, and I know that it's not good to stay on any meds long term unless you obsolutely need to.

Don't be put off with what I say they have helped me, but comes a time when you want to know how you feel without them.

People will say you should not come off meds without medical supervision and discussions with your doctor, but as it's hard to get a decent doctor in this day and age it's easier said than done.

Prozac will help but try to only gave in the short term if possible because it is only masking the problem not curing it.

Why do you think you suffer with anxiety? Is it GAD? (General anxiety disorder) which is what I suffer/ suffered with.

On another note I wouldn't touch Amithriptylene with a barge pole, it's suggested for everything nowadays never used to be though.

I was put on that before Prozac, and it turned me into a complete zombie I had no life at all. My sister had it for 15+ years and had a cardiac arrest which was said to of been caused by its long term use, another GP not reviewing meds in long term use. My other sister was on BP meds for to long without any review and now has horrible problems with her pituitary gland.

I was given prozac for anxiety and supposed depression (in fact later diagnosed with ME so not depressed at all.) I was bouncing off the walls as made me wired and so anxiety worse. Everyone is different and my reaction may have been due to my underlying ME condition. I found CBT where I could take control myself really helped. Knowing that a panic/anxiety attack or response always reached a peak and would then subside, really helped take the fear of something dreadful happening because of it, away. I continue to manage my anxiety this way. It has to be practiced constantly but at least I feel alive and not controlled by doctor or pill. I take Amytriptlyn 25mg at night to aid sleep and body pain. Never during day unless have migraine then take to help me sleep off the migrain without taking lots of painkillers, which had fouled up my liver due to high amounts to control migrain. I think everyone has to try things and find what works for them. Listen to your body and be guided by your own wisdom. Stay positive.

Hi there, I have been on these kind of antidepressants for 15 years now, have little or no side effects from them apart from indigestion if not taken with food. I have weaned myself off them twice, but have found that I felt just as anxious as before I started taking them. Discussed this with my GP he said they have no data for long term use so he couldn't advise, I decided life was much better on them than off them so continue on a 20mg dose, the doctor did change the type to Citalopram, (I don't know why) which is the same family of drugs and work just the same. The anxiety was awful had to keep checking things and some days I couldn't bring myself to drive the car I felt so jittery, I feel like I have been given my life back and would not knock them at all, I fear the day if I have to come off them.

I have just read my reply and realised the way it was phrased it looks like I am taking amytriptaline, I am not, I am taking Ssri's (Prozac family of drugs) serotonin reuptake inhibitors. My daughter did take amytriptaline for a while but they just zonked her out.

Prozac, Fluoxetine is used for mental health symptoms and been available since 1989, or thereabouts.

Your on a starter dose...and may not feel any better until at least 3-4 weeks. Keep a diary, so you can discuss moods, anxiety levels and possible increases in Prozac if required. Try to open a dialog with nurse at your surgery...or better still GP prescribing.

Do not miss a dose. Take it regularly...preferrably same time every day.

This medication is what I call a loader, body has to have consistent dosing...to compensate for brain not making it.

Give it time, if you feel better do not just stop...discuss weaning if you want to stop.

Amitrip turned my tongue hairy and black.

I have chronic anxiety, ptsd, but have been refused any mental healthcare since I am an adult diagnosed with Autism. It's been over 5 years since being refused mental health support... As NHS claims they do not provide mental support care to adults diagnosed with Autism.

I did apply for funding to see a private Dr. S. Ward-Saunders....it took a year to get approval...by which time she moved to Colchester and arranged appointment I was unable to get to, which worried my sick...I am Auto-immune Comprised and requested it re-arranged ...but she requested I be re-referred and took funds already paid without ever seeing her!

So left to deal with PTSD from decade of abuse, rape and kidnap of my children following divorce manipulated by my abuser and father of my children. Deportation from only home I had known since 18, as non-essential personnel by US immigration after terrorist attack 911. I spent two years imprisoned trying to fight for my kids... Lost my home, ability to work, everything... But I am not equipped to communicate...I was beaten, abused in prison...my life threaten by both inmates and prison staff.

5080 day since I held my children. Now grown men...deploying to Mid East with US Army and Marines.

I wish you luck, there are many different meds out there...not all work..but do not give up.

hi yea im on prozac have been for a few years its helpt me ,it seems to help you cope with anxiety, hope it helps you

Hello

I take Amitryptalene and I take it at night, that seems to work for me, it stops me being sleepy during the day.

You will get contraindications from both medications, both are the same family of drugs so the contraindications are the same. Amitryptalene is the older of the two and now it is used to suppress nerve damage.

The most problematic side effects are the withdrawal effects you get if you stop it too quickly. If you do ever come off it, make sure you taper down extremely slowly to avoid nasty psychological and physical effects from it.

The other thing that can happen is that while it takes away anxiety, it can really dull your emotions, so it makes it a bit more difficult to notice how other people are feeling. That can make other people think you are a bit cold emotionally, so be aware that it may make it a bit harder to relate emotionally to friends and family - though of course that can be a good thing if your anxieties are aggravated or caused by people around you.

Google for the suicidal effects of drugs like prozac.

drugwatch.com/prozac/lawsui...

".....The drug was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1987, and it eventually gained approval for treatment other than depression. But by 1990, Prozac was linked to dangerous side effects that included suicidal thoughts and violent behavior.

......

Early cases involved allegations over violent side effects. Lawsuits alleged that Eli Lilly was grossly negligent because it failed to properly warn doctors and consumers about the dangers. In patients with no chemical imbalance, the drug appears to create an imbalance, leading to an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and violent behavior. In fact, the drug came under widespread scrutiny during the 1990s after several Prozac patients hurt themselves or others. These people were reportedly free from suicidal or violent tendencies before taking Prozac.

In 1992, a federal judicial panel moved federal Prozac cases to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. By 2000, Eli Lilly had reportedly paid more than $50 million to settle more than 30 Prozac lawsuits related to murders or suicides. More settlements followed.

Even more lawsuits came after Prozac use during pregnancy was linked with birth defects, including anencephaly, a fatal defect in the neural tube. Newborns also can experience septal defects, damaged hearts or cleft lip or palate if their mother took Prozac while pregnant.

"

I know someone who was given Prozac and his manner could be quite aggressive. When he stopped taking it his aggressive manner disappeared.

Yes I have. I was the same way until the medicine was in my system for a month before it was really working for me. If you are that worry it not working for you. You may need to go back to your doctor and they may have to change the medicine for you. Stay strong. Hopefully this will help you that you are not alone in this we are here to help too. Hope you have a wonderful day.
