Hello Bob here
Nothing to worry about, you could end up with prezzies.
Normally they will discuss with you how you are getting around in the house, and managing when you go shopping and bathing, They suggest things that will make your life less of a chore when you are preparing food. look into the bathroom to see if you need rails fitted to walls to get you into the bath, also a seat that rises and fall in the bath so it takes away the problems associated with bathing. They look at the shower unit and again can fit rails and a seat etc
They can raise the toilet to make it easier to sit up and down.
They also look at the bedroom for how you also manage there,
Basically they assess all things you do in the property and how you manage outside, do you need a wheel chair or a walking frame things like that.
So do not worry all is too help you in everyday tasks. I can be like Christmas with the bits and pieces they can offer you to make life easier
All the best
BOB

Bob, I'll need to get some steam up to tell you the whole sorry saga. But as soon as I get some energy - I'll be pleased to bend your ear. I get angry even remembering it!

Occupational Therapists are angels in disguise, they show you really simple ways of do the things you find so difficult. You get the chance to try new equipment, to meet other specialists like the hand lady to make you splints. They gave me a bath board, so simple and meant I could transfer on to it and have a shower on my own for first time in months. I can not speak highly enough about these wonderful people have fun. Mine actually came with me to visits to my specialist so that she could make sure I got the correct physio and help that I needed both then and in the future.

Well I wish they had been as nice to me as welshnut says. They did ask questions. Decided I could help myself and yes I did get a walker for indoor use but I did tell them and this is 23 years ago, I had brought up the stuff I got in Colchester. They were not interested after that. Did I do wrong in saying? They could see the bars around the loo etc. Have one shower I cannot use and desperate for help and not got any. Lady did come recently and was nice. But no help. I cannot use loo paper. Can't use the gadget that can wipe. And a downstairs loo and shower I can't use as I need to sit on a wall [bath side] to manage. Do we make a bathside of say 2 inch wide wood and support it against the wall? Ask questions and it is wise to write them down before they come. Plead for help.
in my opinion the Colchester pain team are one of the best I have come across. I would advice that you go back and speak to them again.
Aww skeggy I am so sorry you had a negative experience. Maybe time to call them out again and have a friend with you to reinforce the areas you are having difficulties with. I have had such a different experience and I do not think it is fair that depending what area you are in depends on the help that you get.

Too me the occupational therapists are the god of medical services...
Mine helped me out a lot last summer, she got me a stool and handrail for the shower, a perching stool for the kitchen and finally she got me a stairlift as I was bedded downstairs for 7mths until the stairlift was authorised by the local council.
So yes I think a O.T are great.
Good luck.
