Dear Pamela

I'm interested to see the answers to this one so I can plan how to stave off neuropathy too. Keep posting to let us know how everything is going. xx Annie

I was told about it by a friend who is a retired paediatrician and has had chemo herself. Being as I still have lasting effects from the first time I am anxious about accumulative effects this time. There are several mentions of it if you Google peripheral neuropathy. Pamela X

I took them on prescription and found that although I still got peripheral neuropathy it was minimal. No real pain and I was able to do buttons with my fingers no problem. Always worth a shot if things don't do you harm

Thankyou Sue Becky and Wendy,

What doses did you take. They seem difficult to get over the counter. You were obviously prescribed them but I start chemo next tuesday and will not see my oncologist before then. The last time I went to the oncology clinic I didn't see my usual Doc as he was on holiday. I mentioned my worries about p. neuropathy to the Doc I saw but he was quite dismissive about it. I felt a bit let down as my usual oncologist is very understanding. Pamela x

I took them during and after Chemo and it certainly helped. My oncologist prescribed another course at my last check up to see if it will help alleviate some of the ongoing issues. Certainly worth a go as I didn't/don't suffer any adverse side effects.

Dear Pamela,

This may not be related but after first line chemo and several months of tests by GP they found I had no intrinsic factor in my stomach and could not process Vitamin B12. I have three monthly injections of Cobalin-H solution in my arm and found that this has made an enormous difference to helping alleviate symptoms of fatigue, concentration. I am sure that Vitamin B capsules will do no harm and can only help.

Best Wishes,

Wendy xx

Hi there ,

I have mention this before that before I started my chemo ..carbo /taxol last Feb I researched on the net what I could do to try and prevent neuropathy and came up with Glutamine ...a protein powder .

I took it for two weeks each time after the chemo and my fingers and toes are fine .

I emailed my consultants secretary and she asked him if it was ok to take and he said yes so I went a head with it .

Thanks Jan

Have been to Holland and Barret and bought some this morning so will give it a try and report on the results. Also got some Vitamin B complex!

My peripheral neuropathy got worse after my last chemo session so I thought I'd try B vitamins. My Doc suggested to just buy a Vitamin B complex over the counter which I did. I'm not sure if the tablets had/or are having an effect or not but the PN has improved a little. Must admit I haven't taken them as regularly as I probably should but then the tablets warn that if you take them too long you may get mild tingling and numbness! (Got that already!)

My MacMillan nurse said her experience is that it works for some and not for others. Worth a try I think.

I haven't been taking vitamin B... I've been on 1000 of vit D and 400 vit E

I always take the D because I'm deficient and the vit E was recommended by my oncologist. I'm on carbo and taxol and so far any neuropathy I've experienced seems temporary.

Warmly,

Erika

Hi, I have had peripheral neuropathy for many years and take vitamin B12, but have read a lot about the benefits from taking alpha lipoic acid, 700mg a day, for help with neuropathy, doesn't work in a week or so, I have been taking it for months now and really feel some benefit. However nothing will cure peripheral neuropathy , short of an operation and that doesn't always work, so we can only do our best to alleviate it. I do hope you get some relief soon.
