Second opinion

Today I am going to my gp to ask for a second opinion as I feel my onc has given up on me and I still have a lot of fight in me yet. Please can I have any info on how to go about this and who and where I should go to. Much appreciated.

Hi I am new to all of this as just diagnosed but as I work in healthcare I know that every patient has the right to ask for a second opinion. Your oncologist could refer or your GP, the royal Marsden will take referrals and in some cases will take on care, but it depends where you live and you can't self refer. Hope that you get the care that you deserve and good luck on your journey x

Hi Madz

Welcome to our group. It's good to have you with us even though we wouldn't have wished it on you. You'll find there's a lot of fun here as well as advice - though with your qualifications you're definitely going to be a great help to us!

Looking forward to getting to know you more.

xx Annie

thank you ladies, think the royal marsden seems to be the way forward as i keep hearing about it over and over again. I spoke to Ruth last week who had suggested the royal marsden or christies in manchester. Appointment with gp is in an hour so hopefully can get things underway. Madz I am so very sorry that you have had to join us but am certain that this site will be a fountain of knowledge for you and you will definately get all the support you need. I don't know what i would have done without it. This site is always where i get all my answers.

Thank you for your welcome - have to admit I am still getting over the fact that I have OC. I had my surgery within 2 days of diagnosis 3 weeks ago but unfortunately have nodules in my lung on CT. I am seeing the oncologist on Friday to plan out my chemo. I have found all the comments and questions/answers on here so informative, now that I can actually sit and read them. I am sure I will be a regular visitor and may be able to help along the way as well!

A second opinion is a great idea. I asked to go to the Royal Marsden and Prof Gore has been fabulous. They were able to give me different, less aggressive treatment there and have been very supportive. It has worked to some extent but I could do with a minor miracle!

My surgeon and oncologist in Preston had no problem with the referral (perhaps glad to pass on the problem!!!!).

I'd suggest as many opinions as you can manage.
