I am so sorry to hear what your mum is going through at the moment. There are a few of us here had bowel obstruction here. I had mine after my surgery, I ended up in A&E. I couldn't go to toilet over 10days, then 2weeks NBM piccline attached so as tube from my nose to clear stomach where I was ended up my local hospital. It was horrid experience. No food go down so as drink. It was painful. Has your mum seeing your GP or spoke to a consultant? Or maybe take her to A&E?
Are y/mum taking some anti-acid meds? Like inhibitor' s of proton pump (Nexium, Pantoprazol etc). In case of bowel obstruction CT od abdomen should be done. Sending good wibes....
You need to talk to your mum's doctors - this 'hot burp' you describe strongly suggests acid reflux, and there are tablets for that, like those mentioned in Reksio's answer, or alternatively an HC agonist such as Famotidine. What these do is cut the acid in the stomach which should reduce these 'hot burps'. If she's going to the toilet twice a day, it doesn't sound like a bowel obstruction..
Am I right in thinking your mother is currently on chemotherapy? If so, these problems may be side effects of that, but aside from talking to the doctors about these digestive issues, I'd suggest low fat, small meals, especially at dinner time at the end of the day, and sleeping propped up, not laying down, as well as avoiding any foods she knows her system doesn't cope very well with - these might be onions or garlic or tea, for instance, but its whatever is right for her. You don't say what medicine she is on for her digestive system currently, so its hard to be sure, but usually, if the medicine is a proton pump inhibitor or an HC agonist, its okay to take something like Pepto Bismol or Gaviscon as well inbetween doses, but see what the doctors say.
yes she on chemi, she has escadra 40mg for burning all the time also before chemo, now she get doxil but this problems starts when we were on vacation and she get more food as normal .. but that was not so bad as now.. that she cant sleep at night 2 nights before she has pain when this iron ball goes true stomach up and burp, yday on day time was feeling that is is better but at night again she has probelm not pain and burning but with burp come out to mouth food or that was leave from food… today all day burp and she has cough from that all,,, she has also bowel hernia and also hernia near diafragm.. this bowel hernia is bigger now days because of cought.. she can more sit but cant lie only on left side…
Escadra is one of the proton pump inhibitor drugs - doesn't seem like its working too well. They don't work at all for me, that's why I use an HC agonist such as Famotidine, which you take twice a day, that works well for me, maybe she's the same and should talk to the doctor about changing medication. I have a very very large hernia too, and yes, you do get more digestive issues, but mine have never been that bad in the five years I've had the hernia for. If she can sleep sitting up or partially sitting up, that will help.
now it's like she's lying down and liquid comes up in her mouth, it's not even food, but it's white with a little foam... she's sitting more than sleeping. I'm just wondering if it's cancer that's doing something there, she had her first dose of doxil, it looks like . that this drug does not work for her at all, because before she was on taxol she felt much better...
That doesn't necessarily mean its not working on the cancer, just that she's getting different unpleasant side effects. Speak with the doctors...
Dear Inguc_is,
I'm sorry to hear that your mum is experiencing awful reflux and pain. Some of our members have already posted some helpful advice in their responses.
We would advise that your mum seeks advice from her clinical team, as they will be able to look into this further to determine the cause of these symptoms, and may be able to prescribe alternative medication to reduce the acid reflux and pain. If either of these symptoms suddenly worsen, or the pain becomes unbearable before her next appointment, we would recommend that she attends the accident and emergency department at your nearest hospital.
Our support team are on hand for both you and your mum. If you have any further questions, or anything that you would like to talk through, do feel free to get in touch. We have a UK support line (+44 800 008 7054) or you can send us an email at support@ovacome.org.uk.
Best wishes,
