First appointment at MDAnderson—what to expect?

Hi ladies, my second line chemo only helped keep cancer at bay while I was receiving infusions. Four months after sixth and final infusion, OC roared back with a vengeance. I’m driving to MDAnderson in Houston next week for first appointment. I thought I would be there a few hours, but I read that the initial appointment can take days! Can anyone tell me what your first visit there was like, and how many days you were there? Did they do scans and blood tests? Can you offer any tips?

Thanks and best wishes from New Orleans, Louisiana

Sorry to hear the cancer has progressed, very disappointing for you . I can't help you with your queries, because the system is different here in England, a scan at end of treatment, then a scan three months later, followed by an appointment with the oncologist,I'm sure your oncologist will have a plan for further treatment , wishing you well .x

hi sorry I can’t help as in UK. Could you maybe call them and find out?

Sending you a big hug for the time being! xx

Thanks for the hug. There are many videos and instructional pamphlets. I will just have to dig through them, then call MDA with any questions.

Hi Sashay. I had a second opinion there in 2019 with Shannon Westin. I had to commit to being there three days. It’s huge (Texas style) and a bit overwhelming. I stayed in their hotel. I wasn’t feeling well in the aftermath of a chemo treatment. They set up an orientation meeting and give you a schedule. I had an enlarged lymph node and they were going to biopsy it but I asked for a PET scan and it showed it wasn’t cancer. If you’re hoping for a trial there will be a lot of information about that. It would be nice to have someone with you to absorb the information. The one problem I had was getting the results from the scan. I finally contacted their records people. Also they have someone who will help you research specific questions. Good luck! I hope they have something for you!!! Xx

Thanks so much, Delia. I was looking at the MDA website and maps and all. You aren’t kidding. The place is huge. My daughter always comes to oncology appointments with me, but this time she will be at a family reunion with her cousins in Florida. I decided to take the earlier appointment, rather than wait until December to the doctor whose online profiled I liked best. I was going to get an air bnb, but it might be easier staying at MDA’s hotel. Thanks again.

I think it’s easier to stay in their hotel because you might have several -hour gaps and it would be a pain to have to leave and come back multiple times. When you’re inside they have golf cart type things you can hitch a ride on. I truly hope it offers you something good. Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks, Delia. I was looking at an air bnb to save money, but I think you are right. I should make it as easy on myself as possible, especially since my daughter will not be with me. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving as well.

Hi Sorry you've been having such a tough time .There is an MD Anderson in Madrid so it may be worth re-visiting this site over the next few days( health unlocked) to see if any ladies post about any care there.

Best wishes
