Hi ladies, I was watching the wonderful documentary Fantastic Funghi where Turkey Tail mushroom was used to support chemotherapy. Has anyone had experience with this?

Thanks and best wishes. Martine xx

Hi there,

Mushrooms have great medicinal benefits, even just by including lots of different ones in your diet.I take many supplements as part of the Jane Mcelland protocol including turkey tail and reishi mushrooms, there are others aswell. In my opinion it is worth giving everything a try, just do your own research.xx

Hi, thanks, I haven't heard of the Jane Mcelland protocol. I will look into it. xxx

Hi, Martine. I work in nutrition research and had a quick look at the literature on this for you. Unfortunately, there's no real evidence that Turkey Tail mushroom is effective as an adjunct therapy for ovarian cancer at this time.

Hi, thanks for looking into it. I suppose we're always hopeful for that magic pill. Oh well, back to the drawing board. xx

My online research found there was evidence for turkey tail helping some cancers, e.g. gastric-related but, sadly not OC. If I can find the website again, I will send the link: it looked at all the supplements people popularly take for cancer. But nothing there for OC.

Thanks, that's unfortunate but helpful. xx

Hi Riverlfo. I saw Fantastic Fungi too. It is just beautiful! As Saffery1 said, there is no evidence that Turkey Tail mushrooms help OC. However, I have ordered some anyway! They were only $60 (Au) so I'm happy to give it a try! It can't hurt.

Yes, that's what I have been thinking. As long as it doesn't actually do harm then there is nothing to lose in trying it. Thanks xxx

Some mushrooms are amazing and I take a few. You need to be specific in the ones you need. [ Please direct message me if you want to know which supplier I use - Edited by moderator]

Much love, Nicky xx

Thanks Nicky, I'm just recovering from surgery at the moment so it's hard to eat anything let alone mushrooms but it would be great to know your supplier for when I get my act together. Thanks. xx

I’ll send you a pm. I don’t think we’re allowed to post websites/practitioners here.

For now until you recover from surgery just make sure you rest and take it easy

I’ve been using them for a couple of years now. I had chemo in 2018 and my immune system was shot. I had it again last Oct til this May, weekly rather then three weekly this time, and my nurses thought I’d been given an immunity booster as my immune system did so well for most of it. I believe it boosts the immune system, and there has been a lot of research on how it helps make chemo more effective in China, where they prescribe it alongside chemo. There was a guy called Paul Stammets, an American micologist, who did a lot 9f research on the use of turkey tail mushrooms with cancer, might be worth looking him up. Think there’s a TED talk too.

Thanks Marilyn, it was Paul Stammets who got me interested in it but that's really helpful to hear about your positive experience. xx

Hi there everyone

It’s really important to speak to your own clinical teams if you are considering using mushrooms or any other herbs and botanicals. This is because dietary supplements including herbs, vitamins, minerals, and natural remedies can cause interactions with prescription medications and treatments. Sharing this information with your healthcare providers will help them to keep you safe.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre has a A-Z database of herbal products and dietary supplements which may be of interest to you. There is a page of information on Coriolus versicolor, also known as Turkey Tail that you can access here: mskcc.org/cancer-care/integ....

Best wishes

I used a prescribed combination of other mushrooms ( not Turkey Tail I must add) and after 2 weeks, 3 oncologists said that they could not explain why my ca125 results had remained totally stable ( my OC is aggressive). One CCN said she’s never seen such a result. We cannot say the mushrooms were working, as there were variables. But certainly I felt strongly they helped me. It’s absolutely worth talking to both your onc and a specialist before taking anything, in particular if you are having treatment.
