DVT in Left Iliac Vein

Hello Beautiful Ladies.I was diagnosed with Ovarian Ca 18 months ago. I actually have no ovaries as they and the tubes were removed 10 years ago due to benign cysts. So it turned out to be peritoneal Ca. Same tissue apparently.

It has been a rocky road - 6 months of chemo and Avastin last year. The C125 markers rose again and the final dose Avastin was stopped.

I came down with sepsis just after Xmas and landed in ICU for three days with a kidney infection due to a blocked ureter. The only symptoms were acute pain.

I had to have a stent put into the ureter and I'm on a low dose of a preventative antibiotic. So far so good.

This stuffed up my next round of chemo and I just started it a month ago.

Three weeks ago I noticed that I had swelling in my left leg - then in the right leg. Scans were done and there was no sign of DVT's. My oncologist sent me for further scans of my abdomen and she texted me back to tell me that I have a clot in the left iliac vein. I have one big elephant leg! The other one looks like a turkey leg - not so swollen.

Anyway she put me on Clexane injections which will prevent further clotting and hopefully will break up the current clot. No problems giving them to myself in the tummy fat, as I am a nurse. I feel like a bit of a drug addict though!!! Imagine if my grandkids could see me doing that!

Anyway, after all that history - do any of you ladies have had DVT's following or during chemo?

Big hugs from Down Under!

Jill

Good morning Jill, I have a similar problem. My right leg has been swollen for a few years now but has recently become infected and now diagnosed as cellulitis. I’ve had 3 courses of antibiotics and lots of cream and yellow line gauze, which helped but I’m still in a lot of pain and still fear the infection is there. ATM I’m also having severe pain in the right upper quadrant. I spent last Monday in a surgical assessment ward and was eventually diagnosed with the gall bladder pressing on a tumour very close, causing the pain. I’m not convinced this is the right answer. Reading your post this morning has made me wonder if the two are connected. I have a face to face appointment with the oncologist on March 26th and chemo starting again March 30th. Sorry to make this all about me but I was concerned about you too. I’m also having blood thinning injections and have been for a couple of years so DVT has been ruled out. I’d like to know if anyone has been diagnosed with DVT or blood clots whilst taking blood thinners. Sepsis is incredibly worrying. I really hope your much better now and your legs return to normal very soon. I have had various chemo and parp inhibitors for the last 3 years. I have stage 3c/4 late stage OVC. Taxol was the last chemo when my leg became infected but not sure if that caused the problem. Hope all that helps.

All the best

Hello Angela, thank you for responding to my email. It sounds as though you have been through and awful lot. When I had that severe pain in the right lower quadrant I was convinced that it was a kidney stone. I was begging for morphine or something similar. They gave it to me and then transferred me by ambulance from our local hospital to a larger one in Adelaide. I hadn't realised how dangerous sepsis is.

Angela, it just seems to be one thing after the other doesn't it? My oncologist said that there is no cure for CA/Peritoneal cancer but we can "manage it". I hadn't realised that meant debulking surgery of 5 hours, sepsis, chemo, scans, blood tests, DVT's and the rest. Sometimes I feel the "management" is worse than the disease itself.

Sorry if I sound a bit down - third day after chemo and that's when it always hits me. I don't know why!

All the best to you too Angela!

Jill

Thank you for your reply Jill. I’m having one of those days where it all seems to be never ending. Something new to worry about every day. Finding it hard to even smile today. Hope you feel happier tomorrow.

Love from Angela x

Hi there. Yes my mum has a huge clot in that place after her chemo finished. She was referred to the royal free in London, uk. They put a stent in and she was able to fly over to our family in Australia in October 2019. Anyway the specialist kept an eye on it and she was also on injections but changed to pills for her trip to Oz. They monitored it and took the stent out on jan 2020.

That is amazing, and very encouraging! A long, long flight for her! Thank you for letting me know. Not that I will be doing any travel in the near future, but it is good to hear that your Mum did so well!!😀😀

I hope your clot gets resolved quickly. I read your post with interest as I was diagnosed with peritoneal cancer/ovarian almost 4 years ago. I too, 10 years previously, had had an ovary and a tube removed due to a benign cyst. I wish they taken everything out the first time.

Thank you Eriksendi. Yes, it probably would have been a good idea that both were removed. However, as it was explained to me, the peritoneal tissue is similar to ovarian tissue. Just a bad luck of the draw, sadly.I hope you are doing well. Regards, Jill

Hi Jill. I had a somewhat similar history. I got sepsis from pneumonia a month after finishing frontline chemo. Then my legs swelled up and I thought it was lymphedema since I had had 20 lymph nodes removed. But they found a dot in my leg and I went on the anti coagulant shots twice a day for six months then once a day and finally after more than 18 months into pills. I have read that one in four OC patients will have blood clots. My leg swelling has gone down. I hope yours does. Xx

thank you Delia. That is encouraging. The swelling in my right leg has gone down - not so much the other one yet. I have some specially fitted compression stockings that seem to be helping, but hell to put on! My husband has to help and he even has a hard time!!

Best wishes Delia,

Jill

Hi Jill, I had a thrombosis in the ovarian vein, it was picked up on my scan at the end of first line chemo. The oncologist seemed quite surprised by it. I was referred to the dvt clinic and and the clot cleared up after 3 months of anti coagulants. I hope yours clears up soon and that your leg isn’t too painful. It sounds like you’ve had a bit of a rough ride! xx
