Asking about Cancer Care in Spain

Hi there,

I'm posting on some of these forums today for my parents who want to spend some time in Spain (once travel opens up), while my mom is feeling well. While she is currently not in treatment they wish to try a longer term stay.

Does anyone here stay down there often or live there? Wondering who are the top rated gynecological oncologists OR hosptials in Spain? This may not be the best place to ask but I figured I could try to ask.

I have lots of healthcare questions so I can help my mom in case they get a chance to go.

Thank you so much.

As far as I am aware they have very good cancer care in Spain but your parents should be very careful about eligibility because things are changing, even with emergency treatment through EHIC and my guess would be that to access specialist cancer care you would have to pay. I do know a lady who spends time in Spain when she is stable and flies back for her UK appointments but she is not a full time resident. xx

Hi, thanks for sharing this information. What is EHIC? I am not familiar with a lot of the terms in Europe over here in Canada but I will continue to do more research!

I travel regularly to Spain and when I told my consultant she told me that where I stay is close to one of the top oncology units in Spain Costa del sol hospital Marbella which is reassuring. I have not needed it to date however my husband had a minor incident and was treated under EHIC cards quickly and very well. My consultant is happy for me to travel to Spain because of being close to this hospital with its oncology unit. They treat people from Gibraltar with cancer issues I understand.

Hi thanks so much for your post. Do you know the exact name of that hospital? That is great news for you.

My parents are originally from Europe but have lived in Canada for years and so the are Canadian.

I wonder if they can still get that EHIC to be able to qualify for healthcare. Any idea if that is that something you need to apply for even if you were born in Europe? (But not Spain)

Would love more information about that oncology clinic if you have it.

Thanks!

Costa Del Sol Hospital. It is a public hospital on outskirts of Marbella
