My mom has been seeing a gynecological oncologist since she had a hernia and they found signs of cancer in April, she was quickly diagnosed with Ovarian 3c and referred. In April it will be 2 years. She started chemo in April 2017, and did it for 6 months while taking Rick Simpson oils. Her ca125 went down to 9-13 and she was able to have surgery to remove everything.. the OOOBD I'm sure I butchered the term but the one where they remove everything, not just the ovaries.
She was deemed NED no evidence for 6 months until 7th month her ca125 went back up. In the meantime most of the women from her initial group have gotten their wings. She has started chemo again but a different regiment including Avastin, CarboPlatin, and Gimzar. But has become too weak and is only on Avastin.
The Dr. Said her cancer is small amounts that are collected in an omental cake, but too numerous to find all and remove.
I am wondering ,why they are not removing the omental cake totally, but have been reading that while it collects cancer it also protects other organs. I'm hoping someone has experienced this and can elaborate since the Dr. Seems frustrated when we start asking too many questions.

Writing from the U.K.- most of us here have had ‘debulking’ surgery and seemingly it always involves removal ot the omentum as the cancer is either there already or may soon be there. So I can’t understand why this wasn’t done for your Mum?
Please continue to asking questions of your medical team. It is part of their job to explain things so that patients know exactly what is happening.
Hi Linda, I think they remove a layer of omentum only, I don’t think they can remove the whole thing as it is needed by the body. At least that’s what I was told after my radical hysterectomy.
Hi Kilo I too have a recurrence in my omentum which initially shocked me as I was told it was removed at surgery. However my oncologist explained they can’t remove all of it as it is wrapped around all your abdominal organs ( bowels liver spleen etc ) and this is where the tumours recur. They remove the largest part of it but it’s impossible to do all.
I too asked about surgery and was told no so I’m back on chemo x
I would however have no hesitation in changing my oncologist if I felt I couldn’t ask questions and him have the patience to give me a considered and courteous response!! I go to every appointment armed with a notebook with all my queries in and not once have I felt my oncologist was frustrated with me. It’s our journey and we need their information to navigate the complicated path we need to travel but we should be steering the car!
Good luck and wishing your mum well too
Bev xx
In radiology, omental cake is sign indicative of an abnormally thickened greater omentum.
My Omentum was removed during my Total Hysterectomy as it contained a 17cm Tumour. Maybe you can ask the surgeon why he didn't remove her Omentum.
There are two main types of omentectomy:
A total or supracolic omentectomy – A surgeon completely removes the omentum
A partial omentectomy – A surgeon removes a portion of the omentum
Kilo, the entire omentum can be removed. Diagnosed 3C over 3 years ago, I had that and everything else removed. See my profile for details.
Get a second opinion from a gynecological oncologist surgeon! Quickly! Your doctor should be answering all your questions. Do not tolerate such dismissive behavior! Your mothers life is more important than an impatient doctor's irritation.
I had a hernia and during hernia surgery they found cancer spots in my peritoneum, which I believe is the bag sort of speak that wraps around all the organs, momentum included!
I asked about surgery. They said no! We even requested protocols from DC and JOHN HOPKINS since I am half hour from there. Again they said No!
My CA 125 was over 3000 and had stage 4 ovarian, in the thin layer lynphnoded of the omentum and peritoneal lining that CANNOT be removed completely...
It was 2012
The cancer was in lymph nodes all around the peritoneum Primary Peritoneal Carcinoma and Mucinous, several liters of fluid were removed from my tummy...by a large syringe
A few months later I had appendicitis too and it had to be removed too and there was cancer in the appendix too,
I'm 70, I had several lines of chemo, cancer down, cancer back, down again, at one point I was down to Ca 30, now Ca 280, roller-coaster...
But I've been here 8 years, living a fairly normal life, a bit tired at times...
I am now on Zejula a new pill form, 300 mg
And I'm tolerating it well.
I exercise, go out with my grandkids and sons, live alone, do everything by myself and eat a LOT OF DARK GREENS a little meat, very little carbs and almost no sugar.. I believe sugar increased cancer..
I still have cancer but some of us learn to keep fighting and live, some of us don't..
There are no answers... My doc doesn't understand why I'm still here, neither do I..
All I can say is the Man upstairs just isn't ready yet..
