Can any teal lady who has required or who has knowledge of stenting tell me why it was required and the procedure. Best wishes to all.

Hi Gwen,

I don’t know the procedure but the reason why a renal stent would be inserted is to allow the ureter to be patent again. If disease has pressed on the ureter it causes a backflow of urine into the kidney which can lead to renal failure. By allowing the utter to be held open with a stent the urine can flow from kidney to bladder again and the back pressure is taken off the kidney. Hope that helps a bit xxx

Is this something you might need ? Xx

HI Levanah,

Yes I'm waiting for an appointment for stent fitting. I've had initial consultation and had a kidney scan. I thought when referred to Urology that I would have the stent fitted quickly but had this drawn out process of consult and scan which I didn't expect and which has taken time up. I need this procedure so I can have further surgery as I have a growth on my right side ureter which is closing it off. Mysurgery has been cancelled once because of this waiting game. Urology also thought I was on holiday this last week because I forgot to tell them I was at home- my own mistake ahhhh. Conseqence is I've got quite stressed. Hoping now for a date asap. Hope you ok. Best wishes. Gwen Xx

Oh Gwen, what a terrible time you’re having . I do hope the stent will get fitted real soon so things can improve and progress to what’s next. I thought you’d be a priority 😢

I’m doing ok. I was really good physically then these last few days I’ve felt not so good but that’s how it seems to go. Lots of love 💗 xxx

I do not have ovarian cancer (my mom does) but I did have a stent placed in both my kidneys because of scar tissue from endometriosis on three separate occasions. The procedure is quick but I would definitely allocate 2 days for recovery. At first I felt as if the urine is being pushed back up the utterer and had spasms. Tons of pain in my lower back. Make sure you ask for antispasm medication. Wishing you the best!❤️

Hi Lind58,

Thanks for your response and your tip regarding antispasm meds. I will definitely ask when I go to have the stent fitted. This whole process of going though Urology feels to have taken for ever and which hasn't been helped by me forgetting to tell them about a holiday cancellation. I didn't realise there would be initial procedures to go through with Urology before we even get to stent fitting. My surgery has been put back now at least until some point in September. All in all, feeling quite stessed. I suppose it will all come right though but I do hope quickly! Lind58, when were your stents fitted and how often do you have to have them changed! Best wishes Gwen Xx

I had mine put in during the hysterectomy so they Could find the kidneys they said. I had another uti afterwards but when they came out it was an easy process. Sounded grim but wasn’t. They did their work and took a bit of getting used to but some people don’t feel anything with them.

Hope it goes easily and smoothly xx

Hi Artgreen,

Thanks for your re-assuring comments. I just didn't expect the procedures and time required before they even think about putting the stent in compounded by my error of forgetting to tell them about my holiday cancellation. I suppose we'll get there!!! Best wishes. Gwen Xx

I understand your frustration. When I needed a hernia repair after my debulking surgery it took absolutely ages for it to happen. In my case the delay seemed to be because another speciality had to be involved ie Gastrointestinal. To be honest it was the Oncology side who were dragging their feet.

For me the way forward was to pay for a private consultation with a local Gastric Surgeon. He was great. He stepped up and and took the lead on getting things sorted. I do credit him with getting me the surgery I needed on the NHS.

All the best

Juliax

I'm glad you got your problem finally sorted. I think my problems with Urology might move along quicker now. Hopefully!!! See what info comes along this next week! Best wishes. Gwen Xx

Ironically I was scheduled to have stents put in before my debulking surgery but there was such a delay, I didn't get notification for ages - and when the letter came, it was for the same day as my debulking - and at a different hospital! Since the letter didn't give details of the operation, I puzzled over it until I realised what was going on, and then rang up and cancelled the stents. I got through without them. Hope you get it all sorted - nightmare! x

I had stents after my debulking because there were lesions around the ureters. Apparently, this sometimes happens. They had to scrape the lesions off. I assume as Levanah has said the stents were there to protect the ureters and allow them time to heal. I didn’t notice having them and they were removed after a few months. Ureters have been fine ever since

Hi BellmoreBell,

Yes it.'s the time it takes after referral and then the hoops you have to jump through. And, I don't think the different departments speak to each other - it's no wonder mistakes are made. Did you need stents put in post your surgery then? Gwen Xx

Hi Gwen. My mum first had her stents inserted in 2011. Did ok with them but we’ve had constant problems with the urologists at our local hospital which doesn’t help! They do need to be changed regularly, it was every 6 months at first, then 3 monthly as mum kept getting infections. They can be done as a day patient but after many long discussions with the consultant, about 2 years ago they decided to keep mum in hospital for 24/48 hours after the procedure to keep an eye on her and give her IV antibiotics. This was mainly due to the infections.

As you said, the departments don’t talk to each other, and if your hospital is anything like ours, you really need to be on top of them. Our hospital do not see stent replacement as a priority, despite the potential consequences of infection!

Good luck with the procedure.

Hi CharlotteSo_UK

Thanks for replying . I've taken on board what you have said re. your mum and with keep on top of the meds, so to speak. I've got to get the stent done first though!!! Best wishes. Gwen Xx
