Hi Bonnie, I don't know what stage your OVCA disease is. For many of us, (I am 3C epithelial HGOC) the only way we can stay alive is to be subjected to very toxic drugs. That said, I am also a breast cancer survivor (Non BRCA) and was prescribed neo-adjuvant hormonal therapy of aromatase inhibitors. The side effects were severe and rapid bone loss. I was in excruciating pain so discontinued that treatment after two months of hell. I was extremely lucky that my BC never came back, but nine years later I was diagnosed with OVCA.

Hi Bonnie, how did you find out you had osteoporosis as I have never been offered screening for this despite having been on steroids for 3 years?

I requested a dexa scan as I was concerned about the amount of steroids I had during chemo and the effect that loosing my ovaries would have on bone loss

I have not yet been diagnosed with osteoporosis, but as I have spent quite some time on anti hormone drugs, which can cause osteoporosis, as part of my cancer treatment, I have had 2 dexa scans to check my bone density. I am now on another anti hormone tablet, so hope they soon book me another scan soon. Is it anti hormone drugs that caused your problem? My sister started to have problems with osteoporosis in her 50s, even though she never had cancer, so it's something I'm concerned about, but I'm still accepting cancer treatment as I want to stay as well as possible for as long as possible, & I'm sure I wouldn't be here now if it wasn't for medical intervention. Sorry Bonnie, I've got no treatment tips here. Just a quick comment on possible triggers:

I was told that my bone density is being monitored on a semi regular basis via dexa scans because the debulking surgery catapulted me into early menopause. That and taking hormone blockers could accelerate the development of osteoporosis.

So it's probably not too uncommon for a number of OC afflicted ladies (especially the low grade folks, since those tend to get diagnosed/operated on earlier in life and they may take aromatase inhibitors as part of their therapy) to keep an eye out for that condition.

Hope your medical team can find you some well tolerated drugs instead. All the best. Maus

Yes I have been diagnosed with Osteoporosis this year . This was confirmed by Dexa scan after I fractured my hip falling on the ice ! I’m due to start Alendronic acid but apparently there is something borderline in my bloods . So Gp is linking with my Consultant . I have just started 2nd line chemo so am keen to try & prevent further bone loss . I should also add that my mother had Osteoporosis so there may be a genetic link .

Best wishes ,

Mary
