I am new to this. I am on a weekly chemo plan-dose dense for OC.I have missed three treatments because of a low white blood cell count. I'veonly started treatment on 4/14. I'm told they want my body to build itself up. I am concerned with missing so many treatments so early in the plan.
Has anyone had a similar experience?
Hello...I don't know about your treatment protocol but during chemo I regularly had GCSF (think this is right?)injections to keep my immune system from crashing (which it did the first couple of rounds). I also had 2 units of blood at one stage- again to prop up my blood counts. I would ask your team what they propose to do about this problem? They may want your body to recover but if you've missed 3 cycles the evidence is that it isn't able to and needs help! xxL
I understand your concern, as I was confronted with the same problem during my dose-dense chemo. When I asked for a drug to help bring up the white blood cell count, my oncologist agreed to order Neupogen for me. My insurance company (here in the U.S.) paid for it. I had injections of this drug for five out of every seven days between doses of chemo. It did the trick, and I didn't have to miss another chemo due to low white blood cell counts. On the few occasions when my red cell count became too low, I was given blood transfusions. Ask about the Neupogen injections...best wishes for your success! xo

Hi there! I also had problems with dose-dense treatment, but I was also prescribed GCSF injections (I'm in the UK, so they're 'free') and I had to have one blood transfusion. But I hope I can reassure you a bit by telling you that I've been free of disease for three years (I was 67 when I was treated) and my immune system is now fine.
I'm also a widow, with one son (and my grandchildren!) in California and one who was my chemo buddy. This is a great site, so please keep posting and hopefully you'll feel a little less isolated. Deb xx
I missed treatments due to low platelets and had to have blood transfusions for low haemoglobin but not white blood cells and still got a long remission. I hope you get back on chemo soon x
Hello= Glad you found this site. we are all very supportive and a collective wealth of information. i also had low WBC's often. i gave myself Neupogen shots between chemos at home. you just get used to it like our new cancer life. Hang in there. It really shows that the chemo is working. It kills fast dividing cells which include cancer and blood cells.

Hi bpitzer14.....So sorry you've had to join our group, but you're in a good place here. My white cell also dropped. I had to miss one treatment. I didn't miss more than that because my doctor put me on neupogen injections......twice a week. I never had to miss another treatment after that. Maybe, since you're so early on in your treatment, they will add the missed treatments on the end. I'm not sure how that would work. I do hope you get this straightened out and get all your treatments behind you! Prayers for you and your family.......JudyV
