Hello everyone,

I was wondering if chemo can cause a sore throat? My sister has had a sore throats that started after the 3rd chemo. It becomes sore when she is most tired and goes away when she has rested.

Thanks in advance

Steph

Hi Steph

I certainly recognise this from my own chemo. Your sister will no doubt be monitoring her temperature too...if it goes up she must contact her team.

I really dreaded this because it happened many times and I did end up being admitted for iv antibiotics but it is necessary cos you can get very sick very quickly.

Resting is good...so that the body can start to heal xx L

Yes as chemo went on each treatment my throat was sore. And sad to say it got worse each one too. I drank tea for throat soreness and I found a honey spoon at cracker barrel for like $1.00... you can use to stir tea or just suck on. I loved the honey spoon the most.i lost my voice for at least two weeks the last few chemistry. My prayers are with you and yours God Bless

Hi - I get a bit of a sore throat after chemo, I think it's the from the taxol. It might be worth checking with her CNS that it's normal side effect of her chemo and as Lyndy said she should keep a check on her temperature to make sure it's not an infection. Andrea x

I had sore throats with thrush. I am always swabbed and issued the proper antibiotics. It's so uncomfortable especially when your so thirsty from having your chemo. Also your mouth is so very sensitive. Xx

Yes, I had a sore throat that progressively became more painful with each passing treatment. I had 34 weeks of carbo/taxol, IP cisplatin/taxol, carbo/taxol. Luckily the worst was during my last two infusions. It got so painful to swallow that I began drinking only liquid nutrition. I did not get a temperature or bacterial infection, but it did make me miserable. I also got bloody noses and a blistery rash on my lower face. Just blowing my nose caused chunks of dried and fresh blood to come out. This was helped by a type of gel that I rubbed gently inside my nostrils with a cotton swab which kept the skin from cracking. I'm thrilled to tell you that all of this went away after chemo treatment completed. Now 9+months NED from 3C it was worth all the discomfort. While I don't ever want to revisit the 12 months of continuous treatment and two major surgeries, I am prepared to do it again should this reoccur.

Yes, I had a very sore throat during chemo. The GP had a look and it was caused by a mouth ulcer down in my throat. I suffered with them during chemo but had never had one in the throat before. Perhaps she should see her GP for a check. Ann x

Yes I've had that but it went away each time and didn't get worse. You need to keep a watch on her temperature but mine stayed fine.

Hi Steph-

Sorry you are going through this with your sister. I had a very sore throat at times through my chemo also. Chemo is very drying for the body as a whole. Make sure your sister drinks tons of water and other fluids to counteract this. the more you drink the more you will flush this out of her body. very important for all cellular functions.

Make a mouthwash with bicarbonate of soda and gargle with it. Really helps.
