All,

I know it's a bit late in the day, but I have just noticed that there is a program on BBC2 at 8.00 tonight re. turmeric and cancer. I thought it might be interesting.

Since I'm in the U.S., let me know the highlights of what they say. Oddly enough, turmeric was just in a conversation I had with a friend a couple of days ago.

Saw that-super! They shd have added that black pepper makes it much more effective. Dill & parsley work together against the dread C too.

This mad person here bought the cosmetic travel pack in pound world & carries a small pot of tumeric & small pot parsley, plus sachets black pepper!!!

Yep

Hi Sherry

Can I ask how you take your turmeric each day. I think they advised a tsp daily. Not sure I can eat curry everyday, so do you sprinkle over everything?

When I cook scrambled egg, stews, sauces etc I add it every day. I sprinkle it with black pepper when out to lunch or dinner.

So, not quite everything but almost anything savoury

Just quickly, Penny Brohn Clinic in Bristol is a charity which has been giving Advice on natural eating, spices, herbs, for years. Also mindfulness & relaxation-featured in last nights show.Their 2 day course is free, but they take donations.

I went there after radical surgery & 3 chemos & they were happy to take me, the resident nurse kept an eye on all of us. Plus, I found ICON magazine there which is brilliant.

Thanks for posting this's as I would have missed it. I have been taking turmeric supplements as well as using it in cooking. Dr Schreiber in his book recommends half a teaspoonful of turmeric powder mixed with a pinch of black pepper and dissolved in a tablespoon of good olive oil sweetened with a drop of agave nectar or honey as the best way of taking it. I think it's well worth doing this and it's cheap. However be wary of doing it while on chemo as turmeric is very antioxidant. All good wishes to everyone. Sophia

I've read where turmeric has estrogen properties to it. Ovarian cancer survivors should not take estrogen supplements. Natural or man made. Our cancer is driven by estrogen. I'm not an expert. This is just what I read.

Turmeric doesn't have oestrogen in it. In fact it's one of the foods that help balance hormones in the body. It's a good one for us.

I was seeing a registrar one day, and my oncologist popped his head round his consulting room door and said 'No sage, no soy' - then he disappeared again! Needless to say, I haven't touched sage or soy since as the tumour I had was 100%oestrogen driven and both of these contain oestrogen. It's worthwhile reading the ingredients on all sorts of products as soy is so prevalent these days. I even found it in some chocolate brownies recently.

Gosh its a minefield isn't it? I have given up dairy as some "experts" think it is implicated on OC, and have switched to soya milk. How do I know if I am oestrogen driven/

Hi Jenny,

Your oncologist will probably know if your tumour was oestrogen driven. Mine decided to request the test a few weeks after my op, so it wasn't given as a matter of course . As far as I know, he requested it from the hospital lab.

I have a teaspoon of organic turmeric with black pepper in a drink with apple cider vinegar and lemon juice every morning and take a curcumin supplement daily too.
