I've seen that lots of people use turmeric to help in the fight against cancers but I don't know which one to buy. Can anyone suggest a specific brand or strength. There appear to be so many on the market and I feel a bit clueless. many thanks. Sian xx

Someone else here can probably help you better as far as brand, and dosage goes, but I will say to look for one that includes piperine, or mentions black pepper, as that helps it absorb much better in your body. Additionally, turmeric supplements are usually advertised as "Curcumin"

Another word of caution is to possibly avoid taking this if you're on any kind of blood-thinning medication, as Curcumin/Turmeric can also act as sort of a blood thinner, and increase bleeding. Same for if you have a wound, or before/after surgery as it's anti-coagulant, so wound healing would take longer.

I know there are some that simply buy the turmeric spice and just put it in their foods and such. It's mostly used for coloring stuff, but does have its own mild flavor. It can be easy to stain things like cups, etc..so be careful with it. I've read that it's also popular in countries like India to make a tea with it, mixing it with warm milk, or water, and some other spices (nutmeg, cinnamon, etc..).

I've been having curcumin with meals since last year when I was on carbo/avastin. I'm now on avastin only for (hopefully) the next year. My oncologist said I can eat or drink anything except sugar and green tea. I still run things by him and he checks them out, if he doesn't already know, and curcumin was given the green light. The only time my blood got into trouble and I was getting nose bleeds was when I was I was still on the weekly carboplatin and my platelets dropped too low. Now they have recovered and I didn't stop the curcumin. I did read that it needs oil to be absorbed into the system and the spice is better than supplements, but I didn't read up much about it to be honest. Mac27-UK is right as she knows about these things and she's right when she says there will never be a trial. Shame really, but there have been one or two research studies done, mainly in China.

I'm happy to give anything a go until it doesn't agree with me or makes my bloods go wonky. xxxx

Thank you so much Michael. This is really helpful. I hadn't realised the connection between turmeric and black pepper for absorption. I think I'd probably prefer a tablet rather than staining everything but it'seems good to know that it can be taken this way too.

I was told by my oncologist that there is no medical evidence that it is preventative. So I took his advice. Xx

The difficulty with all these supplements is, there's unlikely ever to be a trial that puts them to the test as there's no money to be made by big pharma!

I was told that 8g a day of Curcumin is the therapeutic dose.

I take Curcumin capsules (vegan) from Simply Supplements, a UK mail order Vitamin company.

They contain 12,000 mg Curcumin, Vit C & Black Pepper.

Contrary to what some ignorant doctors may know, there is growing evidence of the antiangiogenetic properties of this herb, which keep the kind of blood vessels forming that feed cancer tumers.

Here is a useful link:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

I am trying to stick with a cancer fighting diet.

Best of luck,

I use HealthSpark Curcumin C3 Complex as it it the active ingredient of Turmeric (ie curcumin) with the Piperine that helps it be absorbed. From Holland and Barrett so easy to get. I'd echo others in that you might want to check with your doc it won't interfere with any other meds.

My onc is very much of the 'nothing is proven' mentality but there is enough evidence including clinical research papers to make me think its worth a go. I've spent a long time researching and am of the opinion that it may help and nothing says it will hinder so why not? To add to Laura's post above, It is also a natural anti inflammatory apparently too and some think that cancer thrives in a body with higher levels of inflammation.

I take the normal dosage but am aware that there are people who have been fighting aggressive active cancer who take 8g per day. Cue intense yellow wee i'd imagine!

Not cheap but hey as the L'Oreal people say.. I'm worth it!!

p.s. As an aside, I had tonsillitis recently which i've had quite a few times. EVERY time it has resulted in me getting a raging temperature, unable to swallow, feeling like I've swallowed huge spiky golf balls and looking like the walking dead. Almost hospitalised once. This time I had no temp, mildly off colour and only realised I had tonsillitis when I inspected my tonsils which were swollen and covered in white spots. Doc issued antibiotics as a precaution due to my history but not as they were necessary. You could say it was my first ever mild case but I'm curious if the curcumin made the inflammation less...

Hello All

Early research into turmeric looks promising. These are just some precautions to bear in mind before starting taking a turmeric supplement:

Please do not purchase Fortodol (Miradin). Fortodol contains the strong anti-inflammatory drug nimesulide which can cause serious damage to the liver and is not licensed as a medicine in the UK. There is more information on the Cancer Research UK website here:

cancerresearchuk.org/about-...

Also, do let your medical team know if you are taking turmeric as other members have mentioned, it can increase your risk of bleeding and shouldn't be taken if you are on anti-coagulants. It can also interact with Caelyx, and some other medications.

There's also some evidence of turmeric having an oestrogen-like effect so if your tumour is hormone sensitive it would be advisable to discuss with your oncologist before taking it.

The link Mac27-UK provided is an excellent resource for reliable information on this.

Best wishes

Hello Gwen

Just to let you know I haven't forgotten about this. I've been chasing a reply - obviously as clinicians they're very busy - and they responded to say they would come back to me, it just needed a final check. I've chased again this week so I'll let you know as soon as I've heard. I'm sorry for the delay but hopefully not too much longer until we get a reply.

Best wishes

Hi Sian, I haven't tried this but you can look up a 'recipe' for 'golden milk' - made from fresh turmeric, fresh ginger & black pepper.

If we KNEW it'd help, we'd definitely try it, wouldn't we? Why don't the Oncologists look into it more?? So we can really discuss diet/supplements at our appointments..

Wishing you well, Lxx 🌺

Hi Linda thanks for that. I did talk to the team before I posted on here but they really don't rate it at all citing lack of medical evidence or trials and success only being based on anecdotal evidence. It's so hard to know what to do.

I used the one from Pukka, but to be honest despite using it for sometime , every health professional I have spoken to has pooh poohed it and that put me off a bit. I add it to cooking mainly because once I try something I then don't know if it helped or not. We need a HU research centre with guinea pigs lol

Good luck with your choice

I got this online from Seventh Wave as it is supposed to be pure and in vegecaps-didn’ Have the black pepper with it though. Took it for tennis elbow for years and it was good. Don’t take it now though. It didn’t stop me getting cancer.

Have a look on here:

facebook.com/groups/turmeri...

The women who admin the page are both pharmacists (I think) and have researched turmeric for various ailments. They advise making a paste with powdered turmeric. oil and black pepper as the most effective way for your body to absorb and benefit from the turmeric. There is a cancer protocol which I find less easy to understand.

It’s a widely used ingredient in Brazil in a variety of dishes. I love it ! I have my own plant and I can buy the fresh powder in the markets. I can tell you that it is a powerful blood thinner. I will definitely look for scientific articles on anti cancer research!

Welshandproud profile image

Sounds good. Does it stain your teeth when taken in this way? I thought I might end up looking like a heavy smoker!!

in reply toWelshandproud

No it doesn’t! Turmeric is soluble in oils and fat, not water. If you use it in dishes you must mix it with oil along with garlic, onions... Just keep it away from fingers, fingernails and clothes! 🤗

I use Radiance / Platinum Tumeric Circumin 1000 mg. Gluten free and dairy free. I've been cancer free 4 yrs. I'm stage 3c clear cell ovarian cancer. It's helping me. I also drink lots of tea. In my black tea I put a couple drops of tumeric in tea. It changes the flavor but it's doable. Best wishes Liz

Dear Welshandproud. I use organic turmeric root as the powdered one may have colour enhancing harmful chemicals used in them. We use approx 3 little finger size roots pressed tgrough a juicer (we use Omega which is excellent). Its best absorbed when mixed with a little bit of black pepper as well as some source of fat. We add organic coconut oil and blend it. On the side I have a home made kefir as a good source of fat as well (you can buy one in polish shop much cheaper than health shops and delicious). I drink turmeric as a shot of approx 120ml. You can always use turmeric root in cooking ie curries soups ect. Hope that helps. Best of Luck. Xxx

Thank you for that Marta. I'll certainly try the kefir. It sounds like it makes the turmeric more palatable and I'll continue adding turmeric to my curries and biryani rice xx
