Has anyone had a stent in the bowel? My daughter has just been told she may have to have one fitted. Was it keyhole surgery?

I had one inserted in 2004 to try and keep the colon open where a tumour was pressing on it.My tumour was very low down near the anus so it was inserted there after dilating the colon with air.It was an uncomfortable and caused a lot of wind afterwards which soon went.Unfortunately the tumour kept growing so I had a colostomy operation which has been fine for the last ten years.

Hi. Can't help yet I'm afraid, but my Docs are just exploring the possibility of this op for me as well, having just suffered second bowel obstruction and wanting to avoid a colostomy if at all possible. Didn't even know such a thing existed until a few days ago and don't know much about it yet, only that is designed to be flexible and enable the bowel to be kept wide enough past an obstruction. Doc did say it isn't something they do often for ovarian cancer, but is becoming more popular.

I had a stent fitted in March. The blockage in the bowel turned out to be a recurrence of oc after 6 months remission. The procedure itself was uncomfortable but didn't take too long and they used a mild sedative, which helped. Because of the position of the lump, they weren't sure it would be possible to fit the stent, but so far so good. Managing your diet is tricky but a low residue one works, coupled with regular use of movacol. I'm now about to have my third session of chemo and hoping that I'll have some time in remission to look forward to. Best of luck to all xx
