Ok, I think I've got it.

You must have one space (and one space only) before the smiley for it to work.

I've never managed smilies with my Apple keyboard. I know it's possible but I keep forgetting how to do them. It would be nice if we could have even more emoticons because they can give an idea of mood and sometimes you can type something online and it comes across wrong. Smilies and emoticons can add nuance which is so often lacking with typed words only xx (have to do kisses instead of smilies) ):
