Nervous about Reclast

My Endocrinologist just suggested that I have a Reclast infusion for the year. I’m 69 years old and haven’t had to take anything for my osteoporosis since I was diagnosed. He said that I was in the high moderate stages of osteoporosis and that taking a high dosage of Calcium and vitamin D would not help reverse this. His concern is that the bone density is in the spine and possible bone fracture could occur. Has anyone had success with an alternate procedure that doesn’t use medicine?

I can't help with advice regarding medication, other than to hope you can find a safe way to avoid it. But if you really are at serious risk of fracture you may really need it. I assume you must have had a DXA scan as he must have based his advice on that. Do you know your t-score? Also, have you been tested for secondary causes of osteoporosis? LInk below.

Have you been taking Vitamin K2? Although we need Vitamin D to absorb calcium, that vitamin doesnt tell it where to go. Vitamin K2 (and a few other micronutrients, like calcium) are necessary for that.

Another thing you can do is find out best ways to move to avoid stress on your spine and lower the risk of fracture through inadvertently applying too much stress. A physiotherapist would be best for that, although there is information online. One appointment should be enough to get the information you need although follow-up never hurts if you can afford it. Simple walking is very good for improving bone health. The gentle impact of walking stimulates the bone. Did you know that walking downstairs is good for bones? (And walkiing upstairs is good for the heart!) Tai chi is another gentle form of exercise, and Nordic walking improves upper body strength - anything which strengthens muscles supporting the spine is good. But please get medical and/or advice from an experienced physiotherapist as you have the high risk. We want to help, not make things worse!

I’m going to switch from Prolia to recast. Both my sisters-in-law used reclast with no issues and bone density improved. One has been on it for three years and she got the ok to go off it. Her bone scan so improved she does not have to go back on it. Hope Gus helps
