Reclast vs Tymlos

I took Reclast for a year and am happy to report I had improvement of 11.2% in my spine, and slight increases in my neck scores. The only side effects I had was flu like symptoms for the first 3 days after the infusion, but other than that, no side effects at all. My endocrinologist at the Mayo Clinic wanted me to take Tymlos, but after reading so many reviews from people reporting side effects such as virtigo, rapid heart rate, nausea and many other side effects, I decided to go with Reclast again and see if I have more improvement. I know I should probably go on a bone building drug, but that one and Evenity both scare me. Anyone out there have anything to say about either of these drugs?

With 11+ % gain - isn’t that a bone building result? Excellent news!!

Thank you. I was pleased too! It seems that I can have a 20% increase of bone density in year two. We will see. Tymlos seems to have greater results, but the side effects seem pretty awful. I don’t know of anyone who has taken Tymlos so I wasn’t ready to try it yet without more clarification.

Hi, happy to hear that you have improved bone density with Reclast. I was diagnosed with severe Osteoporosis in 2015. I used Fosamax and Evista for a few weeks, but had to stop because of severe side effects. In 2016-2018, I used Forteo and my scores improved significantly, still osteoporosis in the hip, but osteopenia in the spine. After that I went in Prolia to help maintain my gains from Forteo. I used Prolia from 2018 - 12/2022. However, my March 2023, showed that my scores dropped enough for me to request for a change of treatment. In June 2023, I started getting the 2 monthly Evenity injections.

The only side side effect I had with Forteo was that immediately after the injection I would get a muscle spasm in my back, but that was not daily, and it would go away within an hour.

The side effects I had with Prolia or muscle and joint pains.

And now with a Evenity, the only side effect, I feel is a headache for a couple of hours after the injection, and soreness at the injection site that lasts about one day.

I hope this helps

Best Wishes.

when you came off prolia were you not told that you just could not stop and must take some thing else to prevent loss? I cannot take those shots anymore and I have to go onto something else. I had so many issues were prolia after being on it for almost 10 years I was told it Has to be Fosamax or Reclast

I did not have a discussion with my Endocrinologist about stopping treatment completely. With my bone density declining, I decided to seek another treatment option. My Endocrinologist suggested Reclast, but I was against it and thought about going back to Forteo for an additional year or to take Evenity. After thinking about it carefully, I decided on Evenity. So far, I'm doing well with Evenity, but obviously I won't have the evidence until I have my quarterly labs and my DEXA which is scheduled for March 2024.

Thank you I wish you all the best. I know it’s so scary the side effects and the alternatives.

I am on Tymlos, and it was a rough first two weeks, then I stopped for two days, and restarted to 90% less side effects. Now at over 3 months usage, I may still have a bit of fatigue, some nausea here and there. I had fatigue, nausea, dizzy, really bad dizziness when getting up from chair or bed, or simply turning over in bed. I had two days of High BP, a couple weeks of headaches. But on my 4th pen now, and all the cavities (from OP) in my teeth are gone! I only got cavities when my OP was diagnosed at age 50. Neurosurgeon said my bone density had improved at the last surgery, early August...he's done a dozen surgeries on me, so he knows my bones. I recommend it, the data shows good gains. Forteo is another option, but my insurance wouldn't cover it, it's a bit more expensive than Tymlos. It's also the only bone building drug my neurosurgeon recommends, he said NO to any of the BIS drugs, Reclast and Prolia...as they inhibit bone healing, fracture healing, bone fusions...I've had four fusions, 9 spinal fractures, makes no sense to go on a drug that won't let your fractures heal...that just keeps the inflammation roaring in your body, doing more damage.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with Tymlos and the other drugs you’ve taken. Your information is a big help to many of us out on this site. I’m so sorry you have had to suffer so many fractures. I have been lucky and have not had anything happen yet. Hopefully my scores keep going up and don’t get worse. I will reconsider taking Tymlos next year. We can only hope that scientists will eventually come up with a medication that doesn’t have so many unwanted side effects.

I'm so happy you don't suffer these fractures! I've had a lot of pains in life, but these are by far the worse type. I'm not certain that the Pharma industry will find the answer as it's very complex, we need one that gently breaks down older bone, and one that builds it back. And it can't inhibit healing, that's vital to those of us with fractures! But it works with our hormones, and at menopause, it's vital to replace those lost, as that is one of the keys...making certain thyroid hormones are ideal is another. Pharma has actually been working with the FDA to end compound prescriptions, as this is all political and about money to them, not our health! Many of us take the bio-identical hormone replacement, as I'm not interested in the "dangerous ones" from Big Pharma!

I got authorization for Reclast but have been very nervous and keep putting it off. I have dental implants since 2014. Will there be any effect on them?

As far as I know it won’t hurt your current dental implants. My doctor just did not want me to have any major dental work within 8 weeks of the infusion. You can still have routine teeth cleaning, caps and fillings. I’m getting my second infusion on September 5. I hope I don’t get the flu symptoms again, but if I do, now I know that it’s only temporary and I had no other symptoms for the entire year. I wish I didn’t have to take anything at all, but I also don’t want to fracture. Also, you sent me another private message that I think you wanted to post to the entire site as I have no knowledge of what you were talking about.

Why not try forteo? I chose that over tymlos, had 22% increase in spine and 7 % in hips. If I could take that for another 2 years I would. The doctor wanted me to take it at night in case of dizziness, bit did it for a month at night and had no dizziness so switched to morning before my walk because I had read you get better results if you take it in morning, which I believe I did. Also, just because they say that dizziness, etc. are the side effects doesn’t mean that you are going to have those side effects.
